I was worried about not being able to read a DVD-Ram disc on my computer for editing however it seems I can get a drive to do that. I can buy the recorder for $400 online or I see my local CompUSA has it today for $450 so I may just drive over and pick one up.
What do you all think about this model recorder? Should I get one that has a hard drive? The model E80 has a hard drive but goes for $700 online.

Use pricegrabber.com. You can find the DMR-E80 for $570. I think this is the best way to go.

Beach Camera has the e-50 for $352. The e-80 for $518. Not sure of the shipping charges.
I found it by going to epinions and searching the models. Epioions is here:

I finally took the plunge and ordered the DMR-E60 for $439.95 and 11.95 handling because I want the DV connection. The only have 3 left at this price www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=188120

I think the e50 represents a great buy
My attitude is that this is the bleeding edge of technology and whilst I may we worth getting an all sing eall dancing HD recorder in the future, the e50 does 90%+ of what I want and by next year, the field will have changed greatly.
As such i will have a machine that it obsolete and cost me £350 (wrong side of the pond for good prices) rather than an £800 obsolete machine, by this stage an all singing one might cost a mere £350!

Very interested in your choice of recorders - I'm seriously thinking of the E50 but the RAM feature has put me off - unless I can find a reasonably priced dvd rom/ram drive for the pc? Any ideas on models? -
