  1. After making countless vcds and svcds, I finally removed the training wheels and bought a dvd burner. Things have been going pretty good, but I've recently started burning at 720x480 instead of the lower resolution (352x480?). I've been using a bitrate of approx 3500 for anime episodes 22 minutes long. My problem is that I get pausing in the video and audio at times. The image will stutter a bit, pause, the audio gets a bit out of synch and generally, it fixes itself a few seconds later. Is the bitrate I am using to slow? To fast? Oh yeah, I'm playing it on a Pioneer 353(?) dvd player.

Is there a general guideline of good bitrate ranges that can be used as an example. I have played with the bitrate calculator but high bitrates make me nervous for some reason... heh heh. Whats a good general bitrate for a 90 minute live action movie? Whats a good bitrate for 22 minutes of animation? Or animation in general? Any example of what people use and get decent quality from would be appreciated. I use TMPGEnc Plus and its bitrate goes as high as 9000, but for some reason I'm reluctant to go that high thinking it will be to high for my player to decode. Are these baseless fears?

Thanks for you help. This site has been an invaluable resource in my vcd, now dvd learning experience.

  2. You are playing a DVDR ? I don't think the bitrate has anything to do with the stuttering. It sounds like a media problem to me. Your player should be ok with very high bit rates. That & space is the beauty of DVD.

You didn't give much info about your process, so it is hard to tell.

I've been using a rate of 4600 for TV captured cartoons. Thats just because I want 5 episodes on a disk.

    If I did a 90min movie, I would use a rate of 6500. How do I know?

  3. Sorry. I'll give more information. I grab avi's of anime (usually 22 minute long 200+ meg avis) off the net. I then convert them to Mpeg-2 720x480 3500 bitrate (guess I'll up the bitrate) and MP2 audio with TMPGEnc Plus. I then use ULeads DVD MovieFactory to create the DVD-R and burn it. I have also been using Verbatim DVD-Rs. Is there a specific media brand that people get better results with?

I'll be using the bitrate caculator much more now that I'm not so warry about high bitrates. Thanks.

  4. Well, I noticed the DVD Media link to the left.

It seems the DVD-R media I bought works very well for the majority of people. Maybe I got a bad batch? When I opened it, the first disc had fingerprints on it. A sure sign someone before me had opened it and returned it... Maybe I got the batch someone had stored in thier car for an afternoon giving it a cook??

Guess I'll buy another pack and see if it still happens.

    I'm using these : http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11168018&m=488&cat=516&scat=517

  5. Its not just media 'quality' you have to watch out for, its the compatibility of any particular brand/type with your DVD player. You may well find it will play some cheaper brands fine but other more expensive 'quality' brands cause difficulty.

Some retailers (mostly online) offer sample packs of a mixture of media types so you can find the best. They are worth checking out and experimenting to find the brand of media that works best with your player.

  6. Thanks for the help. I'm going to pick up some new DVD-Rs this weekend and give it another shot. Hopefully it was just a bad batch.

Thanks again for the help. It is greatly appreciated.

  7. Not so sure it is a media problem. I am just converting an xvid to dvd using tmpgenc using a bit rate of 5500. The video is smooth when playing the mpeg, but after authoring / compiling the CD in DVDLab the audio flows fine but video pauses every 5 seconds in Power DVD. I know it can't be a media problem as I am playing it back from the HDD, but I'll post back when I find out where the problem is.

  8. Just a space comment.....

IF your source is clean ie lossless compresed or well done mp4 you can use a bitrate avg of 2500 and get good results for cartoons...clip the intro and outro at the end and you drop the clip from 22 min to 20 min. I can fit 9 episodes per DVD this way and the quality is excellent on my 36" SDTV.

IF you have a big screen HDTV or your source is noisy or was caputred at a low resolution you may have to up the bitrate...otherwise 2500 looks good.

  9. I'm also encoding anime eps from avi to svcds. Anytime i fast forward or rewind the video stays still and the audio starts from the location i rewound or fast forward too. I'm been using the "how to" guides on the website. The encoded file will play thru without any problem (i can even pause and unpause not have a problem with it). I only have a problem with the rewind or fast fast forward feature. I use SVCD2DVD+ and Tmpegnc to encode my files.

Can you tell me what you used for the avi to "play fine".
SpruceUp played fine for me but after compiling to VOB format the problem could be reproduced with any VOB player.

I have had this problem with many xVid avi files converted to MPEG2 with TMPGEnc and the pausing/jerkiness tends to occur more in the dark scenes.

I cannot explain why, but to stop the problem I had to use CQ instead of CBR, set the Max Rate and Min rate to the same and disable padding in TMPGEnc.

  12. for the avi i used win media player and for converted mpeg file i used power dvd 5 both played perfectly (used tmpgenc to convert with a 3000 bitrate and cbr) its actually when i try to view the vobs created with movie factory either off hdd or disk that the stutter/pause is there, around every few minutes.
has anyone used tmpgenc dvd author, i may give that a go to see if that eliminates the problem.
