Using the composite video in from a VCR (that the cable is plugged into) I have been getting great quality captures and I can capture at full D1 resolution (720x480) on a lousy P3 650Mhz 256MB RAM running WinXP Pro. I've been using iuVCR and the HuffyUV codec. iuVCR is not free but it seems to work well with the AverTV Stereo and I must admit that the included software seems rather lousy. I'm still on my 30 day trial period with iuVCR but when it nears the end I will definately buy it and register it. I think it is only $28 or something like that.
Please note that the AverTV Stereo capture card only works with WDM drivers so you can't capture with VirtualDub but you can use another program to capture (as I said I've been using iuVCR) then load the capture into VirtualDub and it works fine as far as editing and frameserving to TMPGEnc.
In other words the capture file will work fine with VirtualDub you just can't use VirtualDub to capture from the card.
Please note I tried the built-in tuner and the quality was very poor but the tuner built-in to my VCR is great so I have the CABLE to the VCR then the VCR to the capture card.
From what I've read alot of people do this since just about any (even el cheapo) VHS VCR units have better tuners built-in than just about MOST of the capture cards out there for computers.
Good Luck!

** EDIT ***
The AverTV Stereo has S-Video input, a composite video input and the RF TV tuner cable input. The sound is a simple mini-stereo headphone type jack as is found on most capture cards and audio cards. I have the audio from the VCR hooked into the capture card then there is a pass-thru cable that goes from the capture card to my sound card input. I have no clue what the hell you are talking about in terms of my post on the AverTV Stereo TV tuner capture card.
The person was asking about capture cards so I decided to give my comments about the AverTV Stereo which I just bought only recently.
So far I am happy with it and yes my write-up was meant to be a recommendation.
Of course as I have stated in other posts I have a stand alone DVD recorder (Panasonic brand) and I love it and think that it is really the way to go in most cases especially if you record A LOT from TV.
I just bought the AverTV Stereo as a new toy to play with and as a computer capture card I think it actually works rather well.
But I ain't giving up on the stand alone DVD recorder.

I use an Adaptec Video OH PCI capture card, and have had great sucess with it. It is a true MPEG2 capture card, which comes with all the software you will need to capture analog and digital signals from camcorders, VCRs, etc, and burn them to DVDs. The card currently costs about $130.00 USD and requires an available PCI slot on your system.

I have the ATI Radeon 7200 ViVo 64mb DDR and whilst I don't capture directly to mpeg2 (I prefer the avi - encode - edit - author method) find it produces superb results with Virtualdub (and WinXP)
Best thing, they're dirt cheap now.
I've also heard very good things about the AIW, this'll probably be my next card (if I can every find any cash!)
