Most all DVD burner rip speeds are locked at 2X . I believe there is a firmware hack for a few that will let you unlock it .

  5. Thanks everybody... I am grabbing the utility from Sony's site now. Amazing that Sony support couldn't tell me about this, isn't it

  6. Here's the skinny: think about investing like another 50 bucks and getting yourself an internal dvd player. You don't want to be using your burner to rip too may movies--why wear out your burner or misalign the laser. Also, dvd roms rip at much higher speeds. In my puter, I have a DVD rom, a cd burner, and an external Sony dual format burner. The combo works out real well.
