Hi guys, I've been through all the articles and most of the forum and using the excellent information from this site I've made my first VCD and it works perfectly. I do have one question though and it is;
Now that I've made the .mpg file I had into a VCD can I delete the original .mpg file and still be able to retrieve it from the VCD in the future if I need to? I know the .dat file in the MPEGAV folder seems similar to my original .mpg file, is it actually the same though?
any helpful advice is appreciated

As long as the disc (VCD) shows no signs of corruption/data loss after you burnt it and it playbacks fine their is no more use for the original MPEG file.
The .dat file in the MPEGAV file is virtually the same as your original .mpg file. If in the future you need it, use a program like VCDGear (available in the tools section of this site) for the job.
