  1. First of all, I have this posted in the Newbie Conversion forum, but I received few suggestions and no answers, so I'm trying it here...

Okay so I've this movie I downloaded and it's:
    2 parts, each about 112mgs
    352x264
    25fps
    divx encoded.

    I've been using
    TMPGEnc Version 2.513.53.162 and
    Virtual Dub 1.5.4 and
    Nero 5.5.9.14

    for my encoding/burning activities.

Unfortunately, when I open this certain file I get an error, something
like "VideoSourceAVI error: The source image format is not acceptable.
    (error code -2)
Now, I'm not totally inept. I have done some forum searches (unending),
and read through most (all) of the newbie guides. I gather that this is
a resolution issue (no pun intended). I haven't however, found a solution
that technically applies to my situation. There was an earlier post in which
someone had captured there own film/movie and rubbed some divx magic
on it AND THEN came up with the same error in VDub. I don't have the
luxury of being able to go back to the source file, unfortunately.

I'm admittadly a newbie, so be kind and use small words please.

Thanks to any who resolves to solve my resolution dissolution.

Only thing that comes to mind is, make sure you have the correct video and audio codec, then try DivFix. Hope this helps.

  3. From what I understand, I think was having the same problem until just a minute ago when i read something in one of the TMPGEnc guides. In TMPGEnc go under options and go into Enviromental Settings. Click the VFAPI plug-in tab and right click on Direct ShowMultimedia File Reader and highten it to 1. Try this and see if it will help.

Is it Vdub which is reporting the error?

Like Dennis1968 said, you might want to check for codecs. Test your file with Gspot, it's in the Tools section and will tell you what codecs are needed and if you've got them on your system.

  5. i found the answer!

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\VIDC.YV12

    rename: "DivX.dll" to "XviD.dll"

there ya go. note: i found this on a russian? website. i havent tried it.

plus, you say 'go back to the original file' what do you mean? as in, you did something to it already? you've left that part out.

  6. Okay, I have heard the codecs angle, I have all the necessary codecs, and I have gspot, so I'm certain, and that's not it. I'm not sure what you mean by renaming the divx dll to an xvid dll, I don't even think I have that folder.
The changing the envirnomental setting in tmpgenc, didn't work, besides I'm trying to open it in vdub. I think there is something about the resolution and it not being divx/svid compliant. Could someone clarify this? Is there anything to it?

  7. nope, cuz i opened it in virtualdub.
i really couldnt tell you whats wrong with it, cuz it worked in both virtualdub, and tmpegenc.
try updating virtualdub to the newest version. if that doesnt work... couldnt tell ya.
    poop.

Were you able to open it in Gspot? is it playable in any software? (Divx player, powerDVD, win DVD, etc)?

Some of the videos for download on the net are ____ed up, sometimes with misleading extensions. It is possible to change the file so that wrong codecs are detected.
    See

Also i have had this weird experience using Dr. DivX trial-video playing normally-but Vdub detects Panasonic codec and loads it but there is no video.

I've had numerous problems with conversions and each time have learned a little bit more so I'll try to help.

First of all, you say that the movie is in two parts each 25fps and around 112megs? That sounds pretty small even for a divx movie so I'd guess that the movie has very low resolution hence you will end up with a very poor conversion. But, that's besides the point.

My question is, why do you want to open the movie with virtual dub?

I only ever use TMPGEnc now. Since I learned about the environmental setting in TMPGEnc I can convert anything as long as Windows Media Player can play it. Simply make the DirectShow Multimedia File reader the highest priority and away you go.

Does TMPGEnc give you an error message when you try to open it up? If so, what is it? I used to get bad error messages with TMPGEnc until I downloaded the FFDSHOW codec which can decode anything you throw at it.

    Let me know what happens...
