  1. I just noticed that an MPEG2 I am trying to edit (extracted from a VOB file from a commercial DVD) in TMPGEnc DVD Author has no I-picutres at all. Is this normal? Can I insert I-pictures? Does this mean it is not edit-able?

Thanks in advance for any feedback...

It would not be DVD compliant if there is no I-pictures so I don't understand this...

You can try the Womble MPEG2VCR which has a tool to repair a mpeg GOP structure to make it DVD compliant. I will insert missing I-pictures and reencode the faulty GOPs.

You have to have I-frames. That's how the file works. How did you come to this conclusion?

Otherwise it would be like water with no oxygen, just hydrogen. Or a human born with no skin. Etc.

it would have to have I frames .. at least 1 anyway (in theory),

you could make an all PPPP encode but there has to be one I frame iin the begining ..

  6. I used TMPGEnc DVD Author to edit it after transferring it from a VOB off a commercial DVD.

The edit/chapter/cut option does not reveal the presence of any I-pictures. If I push "play" (to reach a point I want to edit), no I-pictures (in which to make the cut) are indicated.

There must be something wrong with the MPEG2 file the DVD Author has created.

It may have damaged headers or GOPs. I think WOMBLE MPEG2VCR can fix it, though I've not tried.
