Hi all,
I just got DVDShrink from a friend and it looks perfect BUT i have a question:
If the DVD has copyprotection can DVDShrink still do it's job?
Or do you have to use SmartRipper to rip the files to your harddrive then use DVDShrink to get rid of extras etc...???
Thanx to all who answer!

I do not know if DVD Shrink can defeat copy protection. It seems to copy every DVD I threw at it.
Hello. -
DvdShrink Issues.
--Layer break isn't removed (doesn't affect my dvdplayer just a slight pause)
--RCE protection isn't removed if your doing a 1:1 Full-Disk copy. Doesn't apply to Main Movie Only or Re-Author mode.
See here for more details.

blah...i've never liked any ripping function incorporated into another program...
try sticking to dedicated rippers (i.e. smartripper and dvddecryptor) that are used solely for ripping (latest dvddecryptor can also burn...but that's it)....they have been revised many, many, many times and are very good at ripping
getting rid of RCE protection is simple if you use dvddecryptor..it has an option to remove RC and RCE protection when ripping -
Thanx guys for the replys!
I just tried Matrix 1 movie with the DVDShrink but when i tried to start the movie from my harddrive nothing happen.
I then tried to use SmartRipper 2.41 and picked "all files" and it only saved around 5GB to the hd, i tried to start = without success.
When i tried DVD Decrypter i now saw that it needed around 7GB and now i could start it, so it looks like DVD Decrypter worked better or maybe i did something wrong, which one work best any opinion???
Ok now i have all the files on the hd, i will now try DVDShrink again -
i've always like the combo of dvddecryptor w/ dvdshrink... ripping all files into the hdd and then convert with dvdshrink.
plus, dvddecryptor allows you to remove RC and RCE region protections...and you are also given the option to remove PUOs in dvddecryptor...
PUO=prohibited user operations...i.e. prevents you from fast forwarding during FBI warnings, etc... if you remove PUO's, you can fast foward whenever you want. -

if DVDshrink does rip on-the-fly..then that's not good as you're asking the DVD-ROM to constantly stay active for a long time....may shorten the DVD-ROM's life as it can get overworked and overheated.
downside...DVDdecryptor REMOVES RC, RCE, and PUOs, don't think DVDshrink can. -
won't degrade anything. however, there are harder-to-rip DVDs out there....DVDshrink's DVD ripping ability isn't as well established as smartripper and dvddecryptor.
-
I don't use DVDShrink to rip only because it doesn't remove macrovision and region codes and because it puts more wear and tear on the DVD drive, so I always rip with smartripper first

1) haven't used DVDshrink's ripping, but if it rips on the fly (i.e rips/transcodes bits of the DVD at a time) the DVD drive might be constantly active for awhile. this is opposed to ripping all the files to the hdd first and then have DVDshrink work on those

.....because it puts more wear and tear on the DVD drive
It's like buying a car and being told that you can drive all you want in the city with all the stopping and starting and reving but don't drive on the highway because the engine will wear out.
Does anyong have some real data on this issue??? some real world tests or something...."Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."

OOPS....didn't mean to hijack the topic
got carried away with the tail end of it.....
To the original question....DVDShrink does blow away copy protection, but as the rest of the posters here have said, you need to use something else to get rid of Macrovision and the rest....it all depends on how much you care about your FBI warnings I s'pose
p.s. sorry about the double post too"Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."

@bartman,
of course DVD-ROMs are suppose to be able to access the DVDs constantly.
i'm not doubting whether it can do that or is advertised to do so. since DVD-ROMs (and cars) have moving parts, anytime you use it for an extended period of time will shorten it's life.
again, it also depends on how long. watching movie takes a couple of hours. transcoding/encoding on the fly can take much more. back in the SVCD days, encoding on the fly can take all night long (i.e > 8 hrs). this is nowhere near just plain watching the DVD for a couple of hours.
if it only takes someone 20 min. to transcode on the fly, then there wouldn't be a problem. if it takes someone longer to transcode on the fly than ripping to the hdd first, the he/she should prolly just rip all the files at once to the hdd first and work from there.
-------
also, as i pointed out earlier....ppl were having problems transcoding on the fly (i.e. giving errors), which were fixed by using dvddecryptor to rip all the files onto the hdd first, and then working from there. -
I can understand with making (S)VCD's.....I used to do the same using DVDx and had it set to rip 20MB at a time so that in effect it was in total only ever ripping for ~30 minutes in 20MB chunks and not doing random reads for 10 hours or whatever (I can understand how THAT would wear out the drive). I just didn't think it would be an issue these days with most computers able to transcode and rip in under the time it takes to watch a movie (my 1.3G athlon can do it in an hour and a half with dvd shrink 2.3)

you use your burner to rip? you do know that ripping itself increases the wear and tear of the drive, shortening its life
As for getting a cheap DVD-ROM, I simply don't have the room or the money.....I burn more CD's than DVD's so I have a fast CD burner plus two HDD's.....I don't have firewire or USB2 so an external unit is out of the question (apart from being expensive)....besides the fact that "cheap" here in Australia isn't the same a "cheap" in the US (when I bought my 104 I got it from the US for US$260...the same unit here cost over AU$1000) and another drive will cost money that can be better spent elsewhere.
Maybe using my burner to rip isn't the ideal solution but I have never had a problem with it and the length of time it takes at 2x isn't a pressing issue for me....I simply don't see what the difference is between 1000 hours of ripping and 1000 hours of regular use and why one form of use would wear out the drive quicker.
[edit]
1.5 hours is the most a movie took and I was using the PC for other things at the time (and stealing the precious CPU time). If I leave my PC alone I can do most movies in ~ 40 - 50 minutes"Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."

i had a silmilar problem as u
i want fast dvd rip , a dvd burner, and a fast cd burner
i only have room for 2 drives
i brought the samsung 16x rip 48x24x48 dvd rom for $80.00
and then i sold my cd burner for $50.00 -
not a bad idea vance43211
I would probably do something similar but the need for a fast ripper isn't there.....I'll probably get myself a combo drive when I upgrade to a P4 with RAID and all the sexy bits.........that is, if "she who must be loved and cared for" will let me

example of in US and for me, personally..since i'm not familar with australia's prices:
pioneer a04 2X DVD-RW = $159 (only used to burn DVDs)
16X artec DVD-ROM = bought 1 for $30, bought other for $12 (reads/rip DVDs)
32X CD-RW = $20 (reads/rips/burns CD)
the pioneer burner can handle all those functions by itself, but there is a BIG difference in prices between the DVD burner and the other drives. think about it...which would you rather give more abuse to?? the $159 drive or the $12 drive???
2) also, for ppl who have a 16X DVD-ROM and also a burner maxed out at 2X ripping, there will be a significant amount of difference between drive usage time. 45 min of drive usage while transcoding on the fly vs. 20 min of drive usage ripping the files all at once first to the hdd.
-----------
btw, there is a reason why DVD burners have fans in the back...because they generate enough heat to require their own fans...as opposed to DVD-ROMs and CD-RWs -
there IS a difference between 100 hours of use and 1000 hours of use
However, a new CD-RW drive will cost around $65 as will a DVD-ROM....a combo drive costs around $170. DVD burners are still around the $450 - $500 mark with blank 2x DVD media around $6 (I can get cheap 1x media for $3)
After saving for a DVD burner there isn't much left over to allow replacing other drives with a combo or DVD-ROM drive (without resorting to 2nd hand).......so I put up with slower speeds."Weekends don't count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless."
