You must give more info than that. What version of Flask are you using? Is your film NTSC or Pal? What settings are you using. What codec? Be as specific as possible. I use Flask 6 and have very fews probs.

i've downloade two mpeg2 clips 480x480 29.97 fps
file 1 -759 mb 51:17 min
file 2 -779 mb 50:33 min
i think it's in the ntc film format
i just want to reduce their size so that they would fit a 700mb cd I don't want to make a vcd or svcd---===SATURN===--- -
still need more info, like your avi codec and settings. Maybe a step by step account of your encoding attempt would be most helpful. Ie:
Step 1) I opened the program and loaded the mpeg2
step 2) opened up settings and cropped.....
etc.Turn your head and cough. -
i've used avi output using the mpeg 4.12 codec i used the advanced bitrate calculator it suggested 1719 kbps i leaved the 44100hz sampling rate as it is and selected 192kbps cbr i leaved the size and the framerate as it is. and that's it
---here is the first file info---
video size - 759mb 50:17 min
video size - 480x480
fps ntsc 29.97
aspect ratio - 4:3
bitrate - 2500kbps
audio format - mpeg audio
audio bitrate - 224kbps
mode - 2 channels
sample rate - 44100hz
video structure - interlaced
---here is the second file info---
video size - 779mb 50:33 min
video size - 480x480
fps ntsc 29.97
aspect ratio - 4:3
bitrate - 2500kbps
audio format - mpeg audio
audio bitrate - 224kbps
mode - 2 channels
sample rate - 44100hz
video structure - interlaced---===SATURN===--- -
HINT: FlaskMPEG sucks
try opening the files in a version of VirtualDub that can read MPEG2 files, u can download it from the tools section. -

I really don't know what mpeg 4.12 is...Turn your head and cough. -
Check out the guide at http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/dvdtodivx_flaskmpeg.html. You can also use Xmpeg which is more stable. Another good encoder is DVDx which is freeware available in the tools section of this web page.

Flask MPeg does not suck. I have been using version 6 since it came out and have had very few problems with it. It's not perfect (none of these programs are) but it is very simple to use and the results are as good as anything encoded with Gordian Knot or any other program. I also tried Xmpg a little ago and it would not work at all. Also, xsbs52x is right - if it's MPEG2 you could try opening it in virtual dub Mod and reencode it through that. Still no idea of what version of Flask you are using? Use version 6 and not .594 as I had lots of probs with that. And don't use any newer version as they are tooooo buggy.

i didnt think my suggestion needed further explaining.....using virtual dub with an mpeg2 mod is probably the easiest and best way to do it. why would i have to explain something where all u have to do is read the titles of the menus in virtual dub and u no exactly where your going with it. and personally i have had so many problems with flaskmpeg. i cant stand it. i used to use it when i was just starting out but now i wont touch it. it crashes ALL the time. i mean i opened a file and before i had a chanced to do anything it crashed. it happens all the time with all the versions i try. virtual dub it so much better for this. it is very stable and the mod does a nice job with mpeg2

first let me just say i've already used virtualdub with the mpeg2 mod following this site's guide. i tryed to convert the mpeg2 files to avi with divx 4.12 but the result was audio asynchronization and poor image quality and the weirdest thing is that no matter how high i raised the video bitrate the output file always came out no more than 500mb so maybe u could suggest me so other codec or other method of converting the mpeg2 files ALL i want is to downsize them so that they can fit a 700mb cd

FlaskMPEG is generally not used anymore. Don't see why you would want to. Its not that much easier than anything else, it is rather unstable, and you can achive higher quality other ways.
I used to like FlaskMPEG, its what got me started. But it is a very limited program.
My favorite method.
DVD2AVI > Save Project
AviSynth > Open DVD2AVI project file, add filters, crop, resize, IVTC, ect...
Open the AviSynth file in...
Nandub > 2pass VBR encoding.
or
Virtualdub > 2pass XviD encoding. -
hmmm.....try downloading the latest version of divx 5. divx 4.12 is not a great codec. as for the audio and video not matching, make sure the frame rate is correct and make sure u reboot your computer and close all programs while encoding. also dont use the computer while it is encoding. the processor wont be able to keep up with itself and therefore the audio will not be synced. also try downloading the radium mp3 codec and using that for the audio.

just wondering, why dont u want to make an svcd. all u have to do is use vcd easy and u dont even have to reencode those mpeg2 files, they are small enough to fit on one cd each. plus u can watch them on almost any standalone dvd player. divx is such a hassle

If you encode with a 25fps frame rate, then video will run slower than normal (just 4.97 frames slower per sec) and within 6 seconds audio will run 1 second ahead.
I have had these problems in the past due to, now obvious, errors in settings. I have always pushed my PC to do more than one things at a time - my way of punishing it for the troubles it gives me :P . Have never had lost audio sync because of that. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
"also dont use the computer while it is encoding. the processor wont be able to keep up with itself and therefore the audio will not be synced."
False. It will just run slower. How will it make the audio out of sync? I won't. It will just take more time to prosses each frame and each audio sample if you do more than one thing on the comp. Its not like if you do something eles, it will start skipping frames, or dropping samples. It doesn't work that way. -
Take the audio change it to pcm no compression ...think that well fix your issue good luck

how on earth do i use this program properly? when i tried to convert this vid file it got so larger it filled 35 gigs of space.

Actually, I think FlaskMPEG is a pretty damn good program...
However, you need to be using it for the right reasons.
I highly recommend it if you are doing VCD rips from DVD (FlaskMPEG 6 subtitled fixed version -- or perhaps even the latest official beta). The best feature is the IFO parser which allows you to select video stream, audio stream and subtitle stream. EXCELLENT for making a VCDs of DVDs with complicated layouts (e.g., multiple titles, multiple angles) as you can preview each setting (making sure you've picked the right video, audio and subtitle stream).
However, the included MPEG encoder (bbMPEG) is somewhat slow so I suggest getting the Panasonic MPEG encoder Adobe Premiere version or frameserving to TMPGEnc.
For making DivX, I suggest using the XMPEG version of FlaskMPEG. FlaskMPEG has benefits over, for example, VirtualDub by being more specific (i.e., less options that are likely to confuse the beginner) and that it supports 2-pass encoding easily.
There are great guides over at http://www.doom9.org for both FlaskMPEG and VirtualDub for making DivX.
