I just purchased a brand new Sony DRX-510UL burner and I can't burn my old reliable ACCU DVD-R media at 2X. I upgraded to v1.0c firmware and it still doesn't work (only burns at 1X). My old DRX-500UL worked fine with the ACCU.
I went online with Sony support and they gave me the following URL for the supported media and it is pretty limited to what the burner supports:
http://sony.storagesupport.com/legalagreement.zulu?dlid=dvdrw/mediainfo_na.htm
Anyone have any success with burning at 2X and what media was used?
I'm ready to return the stinking drive since I have over 100 blank ACCU disks.
Thanks in advance,
Joe

I have the drive - I burned TDK's 2X media and it appeared to be burning at 2X, based on the amount of data and the time it took to burn. I havent tried 4x media yet.

You might have trouble returning it if it works - I dare say it will burn at X speed on "certified media" in the instructions, and just writing 5000x on the disc doesn't mean it will burn at that on every recorder.
You might have to just use the discs at a slower speed like most of the rest of the population until these quirks get ironed out - I still get CD-R's that will only burn at 8x on occasions, so don't hold your breath.
I always advise people stuck with slower burn speeds to get a life, coffee, have their dinner, watch a dirty movie... anything to get them away from the screen shouting "come on !!" every 6 seconds. If they work, then why worry ? Just go and do something less boring instead...

Thanks for the replies - the big issue I have is that the media Sony has "certified" is much more expensive than the ACCU media I can buy from Meritline.com, plus I have over 100 blank ACCUs that are not necessarily useless, however, 1X speed really stinks since my system is pretty much not usable while the burning is taking place.

I have a DRU-510A internal drive, and I have been able to burn at 2x with TDK DVD +R disks and with Maxell 2.4X disks. I have burned many at 1x, such as Memorex, Princo, etc. If you know you're going to be burning at 1x, just go do something else for an hour. If you feel you must be in front of a computer, get yourself a cheap second PC, like some kind of Celeron or something, set up a home network and surf porno sites
for an hour.

Why is your system unusable at 1x ? If you can't do other things on the PC while you're burning at 1x, you don't have a snowball's chance in Hell of writing at 2x...
Even with buffer under-run protection, if your system can't keep up with 1x you might as well give up now. Your burn times will never get anywhere near the speed you are expecting if the data isn't being shifted at a sustainable rate. -
I have the 500UL too, and it' burned at 2x with these ACCU dvd-r. I have the old firmware 1.0g though

Folks,
Thanks for the replies - the problem I have is that my older burner (DRX500UL) burned the ACCUs fine at 2X. The new DRX510UL won't do it - it will burn them only at 1X. I like the ACCUs since they're so cheap.
Yes, my 866MHz system (512MB RAM) slows to a crawl in trying to run any other program when I'm burning - whether it's NERO or Roxio. I really like the drive, it just ticks me off that I can't do 2X with the ACCUs.
The "certified" media Sony lists also come with a "certified" higher price.
