  1. Hi All,

I've encountered a perplexing problem that I'm seeking some insight on from the group.

I have successfully made dozens of backups of my DVDs, using DVD Shrink to rip the files, and Nero 5.5 to burn the DVD Video disc. All have played without a hitch on both of my DVD players, and DVD Rom drives in my computer. I use DVD+R media.

I've been trying, utilizing the exact same approach, to backup a copy of Blackhawk Down, but to no avail. The video always plays successfully on my DVD-ROM, but not on any of my DVD players. It just hangs and seems to spin in the player, but nothing comes up. No disc error message, rather it attempts to load, then returns to the DVD player menu / bios screen.

This is the first / only DVD I've backed up to date, that first gave me a warning in DVD Shrink about R.C.E. protection, and I indicate to make it a region free disc.

I've even gone as far as to re-author the disc, using DVD Shrink to pull nothing but the movie, in the hopes that somehow my dvd players are getting stuck on a menu problem, etc. But after each burn, the DVD plays fine on my DVD Rom, but not in any of my DVD players.

At this point I'm at a loss as to what is causing the problem. Again, it's not a compatibility issue with the software and media type I am using, as all other DVDs I've ever burned have worked flawlessly.

Could the R.C.E. somehow be causing the problem, despite indicating region free? I've tried specifying the region as region 1 as well, with the same result. I've even re-ripped the ripped files, in hope that this would eliminate any issue, same result.

As I said, Blackhawk Down has really got me down...

  2. what is R.C.E. encryption? I just backed up my copy of blackhawk down (yesterday actually) and it never gave me any R.C.E. encryption warning. When did you purchase your DVD?

RC is region coding, basically the region protection we are all familiar with.

RCE is an added protection in addition to region coding. It prevents playback of the DVD on the player if that player has been modified to be an all region player.

If RCE is kicking in then it should be giving you an warning, not just hanging. Still its possible that your version of Shrink is doing something wrong because of RCE. Try ripping the DVD in DVD Decryptor, which I'm positive does a perfect job at removing both RC and RCE. Then try running shrink on your movie. Also, if you are using any one of the beta versions of DVD Shrink than the problem might be just that, that it is still in beta and obviously still has some bugs. Maybe try the last finalized version of Shrink, and if still no luck then you may have to try a different piece of software for this particular DVD.

If you can't get this straightened out then maybe put in a bug report to the author of DVD Shrink.

  4. Thanks for the reply Adam.

I'll try again using DVD Decryptor then DVD Shrink to compress and post the results tonight.

If this doesn't work, does anyone have a need for any extra frisbees, because that all I seem to be making lately
