I've been getting pretty hooked on drinking soda. Just curious if I'm the only recovering addict.
FYI, If I muff up the poll, sorry in advance.

I read somewhere that people who drink lots of soda have increased calcium levels in their circulatory system and decrased levels in bone systems.
Reading more into it, i remember an explanation how drinking lots of soda actually encourages calcium to exit the bone! Since calcium is what makes bone retain thier strength (to some degree) I try not to drink too much soda.
but then again, this could be an old wives tale. -
where's the tgpo option?

Normally I would only drink 1 can per day (usually a Dr Pepper or that new dn.L stuff), but since PepsiCo introduced that damn Mountain Dew LiveWire I've become hooked like a f'n crack addict, going through 2-3 cans plus 1-2 20oz bottles a DAY. Of course I also drink about 2-3 gallons of water a day, and my pee's never glowing orange, so it seems to balance out :P
Apologies if that was TMI for anyone, heh. -
I never touch the stuff, unless it's mixed with Rum, Southern Comfort or Jack Daniels!
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........ -

Increasing phosphate shifts the equilibrium towards calcium phosphate, thus also reducing the level of calcium.
High consumption of soft drink (soda) is a risk factor for osteoporosis.

In Ireland, soda is a type of bread! Nothing like a soda farl with sausages, bacon, eggs, fried onions and brown sauce to get you going in the mornings!

Here in the Southern States, USA, 'Soda' is something we laugh at when visiting Northerners say it. Down here everything is called by it's name, but the classification of the drink isn't "Soda", it's "Coke". It takes visiters a while to figure that out. We also say ya'll instead of you all or yous guys. We say mash the button, not push the button. We say I'm fixin' to instead of I'm about to. Us southerners, we're freakin' crazy....ya'll.

I've heard "I declare". Typically right after someone does something that someone else doesn't like. The south is a totally different place. The problem is we have too many people that would kill to keep their rebel flag waving. I say burn the flags. We're all Americans. :P I almost got beat up so many times in High School for saying crap like that.

I picked the use of the word soda because it is more universal. In the North we call it pop. Having had conversations with people around the country I have had my share of "what's pop? pop?"
I usually ask someone if they want a pop or sometimes a coke. Coke doesn't always mean coke in the North as well.
We have our fair share of sayings that make us sound silly. Ya sure. You betcha. -
Generally in australia it is called simply "soft drink" . The only education about how eople speak in the south is from tv shows and "The Waterboy"!

Possibly... but there is however, still, a somewhat Euro-centric view on milk. I'm obviously not a nutritionist, but I had the impression that modern Westernised diets were not calcium poor, even without milk (high consumption of other dairy products like cheeses + high consumption of meat).
Furthermore, it has to taken into view that the majority of the World's population do not regularly drink milk (can't due to lactose "intolerance").

I think the Western diet is worse than a lot of people think (high fat, high sugar, low in fruit & vegetables etc). Surely if it was as high in calcium as we're lead to believe, then the effect of increased phostphate consumption would be negated by increased calcium absorption as a result of the shift in plasma calcium.
Without large scale plasma calcium and phosphate sampling in conjunction with bone denstity scans, we'll never know.Regards,

used to be a 6-pack a day man (Dr. Pepper) but now I've cut down to one or less per day, usually when out to lunch or dinner.
