I have the ATI Radeon 9500 Pro with the 7.9 version of MMC. Can I update to the 8.5 version? I tried to do this last weekend, but it would not work. I had to delete everything and then reinstall the 7.9 version from my CD.

You should be able to upgrade to MMC 8.5, but as you have the 7.9 cd you can't get DVD player capabilities with it. (I have an AIW 8500 and can upgrade its software so you should be able to upgrade yours). Many people have had problems with 8.5. I have not personally tried to install it but I, like most other people have chosen to use MMC 8.1.
BTW: if you are trying to upgrade to any MMC 8.x make sure you have Directx 9.0a and Windows Media Player 9 encoder installed.
I'll try installing 8.5 and let you know how I get on.
Just tried installing MMC 8.5 and it worked second time round. I had to remove the old MMC first and DAO (you will only have this installed if you had 8.1 installed previously). Install DAO then MMC 8.5 and it should work (provided you have the directx and WMP I mentioned above).
It seems to take ages to start up and save my captures though
I think I will just stick with 8.1 -
Thanks for the reply. I will probably just go with the 8.1 also. I have read where a lot of people have trouble with the 8.5. Will I also need to download the DAO also. Is the DAO the same for 8.5 as 8.1. If so where can I download it at. The ATI site has a spot for downloading 8.1, but not for the DAO.

After you install MMC 8.5, you have to seach for AVBISurf.ax. It should be in ?:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\tv. Rename the file AVBISurf.bak. Then everything should work fine.

Yes DAO is the same for 8.1 and 8.5. Use this link to get it:
http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/winxp/radeonopt-xp.html?type=mm&driveros=windows...14&submit.y=13
Just download the "DAO/MDAC" part
Thanks to LanEvo7 for the tip, i might try that but the only real difference between 8.1 and 8.5 is the Eazylook but I don't even bother using the remote so it is not much use to me. -
I have a 8500 and MMC 8.5
I have a problem with scheduled captures not starting
if I use a 3rd party codec (like PicVideo MJPEG)
It always starts if I use ATI settings.
When I had MMC 7.x it didn't do that.
It also screws up A/V sync exactly 650 ms with the MJPEG codec and not with ATI stuff.
It doesn't fail all the time, just most of the time.
I watched it start the other day and it fired up the TV,
set the right channel, and just stopped.
So if I want to capture w/PicVideo so I can process the video
I have to start and stop it manually.
Also when using ATI codecs the capture stops immediately.
With PicVideo there is about a minute of furious disk activity
before the capture ends.
Wierd. Of course there's no way in hell to get anything out of ATI support. -
Thanks for your info FOO. I don't cap to AVI (I don't know if reubenray does). I just capture to MPEG 2 and transcode to DVD using Lordsmurfs guide:
http://www.lordsmurf.com
I know its kind of a backward way to go about it but my capping drive is only 80GB and I usually cap a lot of stuff at once so Lordsmurfs guide is perfect. I also think that so many people just copy their own dvd's and they don't have quality issues, so why not cap in MPEG 2? -
Why do you transcode ?
If I capture to MPEG i make the settings DVD compliant
so I can just author and burn.
Commercials can be cut fairly close with TMPGenc.
They can be cut exactly with Womble MPG2VCR
