  1. Thinking of buying this. Is it ok for transferring VHS to VCD?
Can someone also answer the following:

    1) VCD are universal, you can copy from my english PAL video tape to VCD and play them on an american PC? And play them on American DVD player?

    2) If not, what software do I use to transfer MPEG from say DC10+ to the correct NTSC and PAL?
May the force be with you.

  2. The Studio DC10+ is a good card. I used it to transfer
over 50 LaserDisc to SVCD Format.

When you capture the Video tape it will come out as an .AVI.

You must convert the .AVI to .MPG using TMPGENC or some other software for FrameServing and Encoding.

But you have to pick the type of format it will be. NTSC or PAL. The are not interchangeable. If want to play the VCD in North America it must be encoding in NTSC format. The same goes for PAL.(Europe).

    Hope this helps.

  3. Yes thanks. One more thing, you say I have to decide what to encode it at NTSC or PAL is this for playback only on DVD players. Don't computers here or usa play the same VCD or am I confusing that with CD-ROM?

  4. VCD comes in both NTSC and PAL format. Unless your player is capable of converting between the two format. You have to creat the VCD in the format which you're using for TV signal.

  5. Does this also applies to viewing on CR-ROM drives on computers? Monitors are not NTSC or Pal or are they?

  6. If you're viewing it in computer, it doesn't matter.

Simply, you need to buy a DVD Player Unit that plays PAL and NTSC AND a TV that plays PAL and NTSC. In this way you can choose to encode your .avi to .mpg in PAL or NTSC system color. And your problem is over.

  8. That's right. Make sure you buy one that you can MANUALLY switch between PAL and NTSC signal. Not those machine that have it so call Auto Detect function.

A friend of mine bought a machine that is PAL/Auto instead of PAL/NTSC. What it means is that if he plays a NTSC VCD, the Auto function will automatically display it in NTSC format, but you can manually switch it over to PAL signal without any trouble. BUT if you play a PAL VCD, there is no such function that will allow you to set the display at NTSC format.
