  1. Can anyone tell me if there is a good all in one tool to back up dvd to vcd please. All the ones I have looked at look quite complicated to a beginner.

Any help would be great, thanks.

most of the "all in one" apps are just a pretty front end that runs a bunch of freeware tools in the background.... albeit with less control.

I looked for the holy grail of all-in-one software for a long time, and wasted a lot of time doing encodes with stuff that turned out like crap in the end. I then turned to following the guides and learning to use multiple tools to get stuff encoded... I've been much happier since, and I wish I hadn't wasted so much time on "all in one" stuff that didn't deliver.

I'm sure someone else will post about some good software, and if it works for you, great. But some of this complicated stuff will start to make sense after a while.. you might surprise yourself.

  4. DVD2SVCD is the easiest all in one program I've seen (you need to supply either CCE or TMPGenc as the encoder, since you asked about MPEG1/VCD TMPGenc is a good choice as it's freeware; only have to pay for MPEG2 support).

The default in DVD2SVCD is to make xSVCDs but you can edit/change the settings to make xVCDs (ie. encode MPEG1 instead of MPEG2).

But the truth is in the long run your best bet is to follow some of the guides to the left and use more than one program. It's not as hard as it seems once you get use to it:

    1) Rip DVD
    2) DVD2AVI to generate d2v + ac3/wav
    3) Encode w/ TMPGenc
    4) Author/burn

  5. There is flask with the panasonic encoder that's easy and TMPG. Flask is good for subtitle's and TMPG is very good has better color then flask with the panasonic plugin. There are other tool's but these I would say are the best two to use. There is also SUPER-VCD I would use DVD2SVCD with CCE to encode look's like DVD. Also please give more info on your title when posting when you say All in one that could mean almost any thing alot of people only read the front page of dvdrhelp.com

i have to agree with housepig and Vejita-sama on this one. using multiple programs will benefit you in the long run. you will know exactly what's going on. if there's any error, you'll know exactly where it occured and which program was at fault. also, with multiple programs, you can switch between different programs, depending on your needs.

i.e. for me, i use the standard smartripper->dvd2avi->tmpgenc->nero...

however, if i want to add subs, then i can also use vdub in the process. if vdub isn't working very well for subs, i can just switch over to flaskmpeg for subs....also great for those DVD titles with seamless branching (i.e. ID4)

  7. I have tried to use eazy cd but can't get a copy that has all the drop down features. I have also tried DVD2svcd but after encoding it wouldn't go any further, so I am completely stuck now as well.

I just bought DVD Copy which is marketed by Intervideo. Same company that puts out WIN DVD. It converts to DVD, VCD, SVCD and DivX. You can preview, take out whatever you want using the author feature. Sorry, I'm a software junkie. I had to buy it and try it out. A couple of clicks and you are done.

  9. Thanks for that suggestion, I will see if it is available in the UK. I have tried movie jack but that gets to the end and then comes to the end and gives an error message.

  10. jdizzy40, would that be dvdcopyone? My coworker has it and he is willing to let me borrow it and if it works, I'll get my own copy. TIA for any help.

No pilau ahi. This product is called DVD Copy and is marketed by Intervideo. You can go to their site and download a trail that is fully functional. It is truely a simple program to use. Sometimes in life we need simple. I purchased it for the conversion to DVD to DivX on 1 disk. But as stated before it does DVD, VCD and SVCD.

  13. Thanks a lot Jdizzy. Will check out that site and see if that is what I need.
BTW, do you experience any audio problems, specially out of synch?
That was my main problem when I tried it a few months ago, got frustrated and took a step back but now want to get into it again. My cousins and buddies back home have vcd players and it would be great to send em some good quality vcds.
    thanks again.

Alleycat, you have to first rip the movie to your hardrive. Instead of using DVD Decrypter, use DVD Shrink (free), reauthor using it, save to file. Then open that file up in DVD Copy as source. Okay. pilau ahi, I have not noticed any out of snyc issues so far with the VCDs my sister has done or the ones I have created using DivX. But since the trail version is fully functional you should be able to tell if you have any problems after a few tries.

Alleycat, reauthor in your case would me taking out only the movie using DVD Shrink and any subtitles and audio you don't need and then choosing a compression level that will get your file(movie) down to a size that will fit on one disk. This is reauthoring.
