I have never had a problem of file being too big.
With IC 7.1.1, I usualy select 4.43gb and get a file of 4.25 to 4.37gb -
That's what happens when you try to back up (rather than throw out) one of the worst movies ever made.

Usually I have the OPPOSITE problem. It estimates 4.25GB and the file ends up being 3.75-4.0 GB instead.

Obviously a prediction is just that -- it can vary widely depending upon a wide range of factors. I've never had it go that far over (as other posters have noted, it's usually conservative by about 30 to 50 mb) but perhaps it was just Nick Cage's face that couldn't be compressed much <g>.
This, by the way, is a good argument for ripping to hard drive first (with, say, DVDDecrypter) because then you can easily try a range of compressions to see what works best -- much faster and much less wear and tear on your DVD reader."Like a knife, he cuts through life, like every day's his last" -- Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang -
