  1. I want to split a DVD 9 to two DVD 5 disks, however, instead of splitting it in the middle of the movie I would like to just have the movie on disk one and all the extras on disk 2. I'm assuming I can just put the menu files on both disks and the appropriate VOBS on each accordingly.

    So here are my questions:

I know how to rip the IFO and VOB files, but how do I know which ones are the movie vs. extras?

Once I figure that out, how do I only burn the movie ones on disk one and the extra ones on disk two?

If I did so, what would happen if I tried to play one of the extras from the menu on disk 1? Would I get an ugly error, or would it just do nothing?

    Thanks for you help!

Here's what I do in this case.

To make a disk with just the movie, I use DVD2One.

To make a disk with all the extras, I use DVDShrink, remove all unwanted sountracks from the main movie, compress the movie in still picture compression (makes the movie something like 0.5Gb). This usually requires no further compression on the extras or removal of extra soundtracks. If I still have to do that (small movie with lot's of extras) then compress the extras video streams lightly.

I like the above procedures because they are simple and fast. I don't use DVDShrink for the main movie because if it needs to compress at all, it does a bad job. DVD2One is better at that.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. If the movie files are small enough to fit onto one DVD, you can also use programs like DVDXCOPY.
