Is that DVD rental (divX) for Disney titles only, or other DVD titles as well ??

To be quite honest, I've never heard of the divX rental till I read some
wheres' over heear (I think) about Circuite City use to do this. But, this
cam and went w/out my ever knowing it.

It will be interesting to see how this goes. In fact, if it does, I might actually
try a few (out of curiosity you know)

Evaporating DVDs. That's a good one What if you forget one in the DVD player? Will oxidization hurt the device?

The problem with the media industry is that they are trying to fight the problem they have, which is low sales translating to low revenue, by increasing the cost of titles (both in DVD, CD and SACD). This, unfortunatelly leads them to ever decreasing sales.

Now they come up with the good old sales recipee: When a product is doomed come up with an alternative one. Different packaging.

It appears the industry has not realized that consumers don't need different packaging and pricing schemes, but better content.

Well actually we do need a different pricing structure for CDs. CD sales will continue to fall if people are forced to pay $15.00 per CD. When (if) the record industy finally starts selling CDs at a fair price (6.99 - online retailers) then sales will probably triple, thus making the record industy more profits tan they are getting now. Do the math and ask a question; Would I buy more CDs if new CDs were $6.99 U.S.?. My answer is YES!
I would probably buy 3 times as many CDs as I do now. Downloading MP3s is OK fun, but for real music addics like myself, we need 20 bit and 24 bit CDs that are not all compressed. MP3 is NOT CD quality! I also enjoy the original art that comes with an original CD. I hope the recording industry wakes up soon.

i like liner notes. but if it doesnt have lyrics, its not for me. on another note, people dont see this stuff logistically. if you miss a movie or tv show on NBC that you could have seen for free, download it. you hear a new song on the radio for free, download it. if at one point in time, it was available to consumers free of charge. its free.

mysticgohan17 - Your point makes sense, and I agree with you. At any rate, the record industry and the motion picture indudtry will continue to shoot themselfs in the foot. They have always been TOO gready, and now its coming back to haunt them. They are still making tons of cash to this day though.

How will this help prevent piracy / save money?

1. You will still have 48 hours to 'back it up'
2. Each disc only lasts 1 rental => more discs have to be made but no extra rental income => lower margins => charge more to increase margin => punters get p'ed off => punters look for more piracy methods.

Why doesn't someone come up with a more sensible / workable suggestion such as a copyright levy on DVD Burners, Discs, and Broadband Internet connections? A similar levy already exists in Europe for photocopiers.

Or perhaps they could cut out all the extra crap that they put on DVDs - most people I know like DVDs for the picture quality and the fact that it doesn't get worse as a result of playing (unlike VHS), not the extras.

If the industry had been really clever they would have set the minimum bit rate for MPEG2 so that all films (not extras) had to be on dual-layer discs, that way they could not be copied to single layer DVDs without compressing that would then make them non standard and non playable (granted this wouldn't prevent copy to DivX, VCD, etc.).

i like double sided dvds or another dvd with bonus features. like the star wars prequels.

For me, if they are going to sharge anywhere from $15 through a couple of hundred dollars for DVDs and box sets, they better have a boat load of content in them, more than just the movie!

I like DVD's for the quality of the picture and audio, but the extras are the clincher.
