connect PC to TV

I have a sony vaio rz22g and i have a sony 32 inch hdtv, how do i make it so i can see my desktop and what im doing on my telelvision. i tried connecting a dvi to the back of the tv to the computer to use the tv as a monitor but that didnt work is there any other way. i dont want just the mpeg2 encoder i want to use my tv as a monitor. please help.

Wow ! DVI (Digital Video Interface). That works for a hdtv. Must cost mucho $$$.

can't you connect the AV out s-video from the computer to the TV ?

yes i can but sony has a thing called mpeg encoder which is the only tv out i can access and it only works with power dvd xp. and i want to use my tv as a monitor its not a plasma its a direct view and it has dvi in (digital visual* interface) but it wont use my computer as a monitor. in the manual i read that it isnt meant for use with personal computers but why the hell not. there has to be a way to do it if anyone knows anything about sony vaios and can help please do.
