  1. i've been trying to rip a region 2 DVD in my imac, which has its DVD drive set to region 1. so far i've tried to use 0SEX and dvd backup, both of which didn't work.

is there any way to do it?

I was able to convert a region2 dvd using dvdbackup. The trick was to get the dvd player to play the dvd first so dvd backup could get the encrypt key.

Unfortunately to get dvd player to play the disc I had to let the player switch to region 2 then switch back after I was done. This wasn't a problem since I don't convert many region 2 dvds, but if it becomes a more frequent task, I'm going to have to hack my dvd drive so that it is region free. An unhacked drive can only be changed 5 times.

this works sometimes for me, in settings turn off launch dvd player on dvd insertion, then insert the dvd, then try osex or dvdbu, and sometimes this works for me sometimes it doesn't, and it doesn't ask to change the region cause dvd player isn't playng it.

Easiest way I've found of ripping DVDs of another region than your machine is set to:

    1) Insert DVD (d'oh!)
    2) Fire up VLC and play a few seconds of any title on the disc. Yes, VLC doesn't care about region codes. What's more - after playing a few secs, neither will any other truly Finder-friendly program. You can now use DVD Backup, as both the Region setting as well as the encryption keys have been extracted by playing that segment with VLC. (Pause or Stop VLC, don't Quit it.)

NOTE: OSex is *not* a Finder-friendly program. Launching OSex after the above will set you back to square one.
