hi there, while i am new to the forum here, i am not new to backups. i've done approximately 600 rips w/ cdrs and 100 w/ dvd-rs. here is my problem that i hope some of u gurus may be able to help me out with:
i have been using nero w/o any problems using the defaults w/ dvd-image (that means that joliet has been checked) and accu discs - all 100 or so burns i've done were fine. i attempted to upgrade from 5.5.10.28 to 6.0.0.11; at that time, nero would not see my burner, a pioneer a04.
i went back to 5.5.10.28 and burned a few discs and noticed some occasional freezing which would be random (would freeze at one scene, but on a subsequent playback not freeze at the same spot in movie). i tested w/ a known 'good' burn and it played fine; so, i summized that something was wrong w/ the burn of the freezing disc.
i returned the accu's thinking i may have gotten a bad batch and got Beall's as the replacement. w/ these discs, 5.5.10.28 went thru the burn process on a dvd-r, but i get 'no disc' when put into my daewoo 5800 and my apex 1100w. at this time, all of the cdr's i tried to burn would 'not have enough space' to burn a dvdrip svcd mpeg2. i was like "wft?"
i then uninstalled nero and went back to 5.5.9.9 and could burn svcd mpeg2s again, but still get the 'no disc' message w/ the dvd-rs. the two movies i've been trying to burn have been under 4.7g; so, i've been ripping w/ smart ripper and just dragging the files into the VTS_VIDEO section of nero and direct burning. usually, i'd use dvd2one or dvd95copy if i've had to compress.
at this point, i upgraded again to 6.0.0.11 (w/ nero seeing my burner this time) and still have the 'no disc' result when attempting to play the disc on the set tops.
is there any way to test if my burner is going bad?? i've only burned the 100 or so movies, thus burner is still fairly new. if i've left anything out as far as information please let me know. hate to buy another burner so soon, even if they are cheap these days. thanks in advance for any assistance.

Probably don't want to hear this, but it sounds like something in the 6.0.* install jacked somthing up pretty good. Sometimes a clean install is the only way to resolve these kinds of issues.
I think I remember some other people having issues with burner recognition and Nero. Have you done a forum search on that ? The answer might be there. -

UPDATE:
not a good update...i tried to use dvddecrypter to burn an iso and same thing. i can hear the disc making 'funny' rotations and get "no disc" again on both my apex 1100w and daewoo 5800
help! thanks guys..

It sounds like the media to me. Heres the logic: You started having a problem, misdiagnosed the caused of the problem, got new media, and now are having a new issue with media. Get some new media and try. Sometimes a trusted brand gets a few bad batches out there.

well, dude, u were right. got a generic media disc from a buddy and SOAB, burned AND playd fine. guess it was my bad luck that i happened to get a bad batch of 'good' media.
what was throwing me off was the fact that another buddy had all of the same "components" (burner, discs, set top player) that i have and was not having any trouble. live and learn.
now, i am not sure if this made any difference, but i fixed up some registry errors w/ norton systemworks 2003. anyone know?
