  1. Has any one seen a gremlins VHS or DVD for sale lattely? I need the first movie.

I just backed up Gremlins 2, a 107 minute movie according to the tape in a little over 3 hours! 107 minutes to watch the movie and capture, about 35 minutes to convert from mpeg1 to dvd, and about 53 minutes to burn.

Does that sound correct, fast, or too slow? I think I need some 2x disks!

I captured with an ATI AIW radeon 7500 set to mpeg1, 5,500 bits, 352x480, and 44,100 audio. This gave me nearly a 4gig file which I try to stay close to for one movie per disk.

I used Tempenc DVD Author to open and convert the mpg to dvd files. I set chapters every 10 minutes, nothing fancy just jump points with no labels. Took about 35 minutes to run.

Burning with nero in udf 1.02 to dvd -r in a toshiba 5002 on cheap media, less than a buck in beehives (spindles). I think the disks are 1x. White gloss label, no markings, I think I bought princo's?

So far I have used all the same settings for the last 10 or so disks, other than bit rates, and on the computer and tv the finished DVD-r looks as good as the vhs did. Even at 4,000 bits I had vhs quality it looked like, but I could get over 2 hrs on one disk.

No filters or editing other than cutting un-wanted stuff and setting chapter points so we can jump through the movie.

Does it sound like I am getting the hang of this and ready to move on to harder stuff now? I spent the last few months fighting with software and only got a couple disks, now about 12 or more in about a week with Tempenc DVD author.
I do mean fighting software! I got a 33k connection so you know half that time was downloading all the freeware and shareware programs! My .mp2 files created with ATI would not work in anything. Found out the problem has been fixed and downloading the new MMC 7.7 for my card now and MS codecs.

So now that I am getting some decent disks, should I go to more advanced authoring, or try something else like tempenc plus again

    sounds like you're doing well.

one quick question - why did you capture in mpeg-1 instead of mpeg-2?

and a suggestion - when I was on dialup, and I found a bunch of large files I wanted to download, I found myself a second-hand ZIP drive. Then I found an internet cafe with a T1 and ZIP drives in their computers, so I would make a list of what I wanted and where to get it, go there and pay $5 an hour, sip some tea, read a book and download a couple hundred Mb's of files at a time.

don't know if this is an option (I live in Minneapolis, it's not that hard to find a couple of net-enabled watering holes [although the one I went to is now sadly out of business]) - if you're out in the boondocks, this might be a problem, but if you're near a major metro or a college town, it might be worth a shot.

  3. Thanks for the advice on net cafes, I didn't even know you could do that.
But alas, yes I am in the boon docks, which is why I don't have anything but 33k normally though this call is a whoping 36k
No options other than rural phone lines
I'll try that when I get to the big cities though for stuff I want but can't get now.

I captured mpg1 because nothing will open my mpeg2 files the ATI capture creates. I just grabbed the newest stuff from ATI again, MMC 7.7, MS codecs, re-installed DX9 ect.. last night, now I can't capture anything!
Was supposed to have fixed the mpeg 2 problems, but now I find out there is a problem with some systems if the O/s and/or ATI software is installed on a fat32 drive and you try to capture to a NTFS drive. Capture won't start! GEUSS WHAT! Yes my system! Grrrr.
I did capture a short clip to the fat32 drive in mpeg2 and mpeg1 both, and it works, but I cannot capturte to my video drive now at all! ATI claims MMC 8.1 will fix that problem. Ya sure, then what does it break?

I'm gonna check out MMC 8.1, but I think I read you have to have a new ATI disk to install 8 and above, $10 for the disk (I think) and who knows how long to get it?

I download newest MMC from a website for my 8500dv, can't remember the name though. Do a google search.

One thing I am wondering how long it will take to capture mpeg2 from dv through 1394? I will give it a try later.

  7. I got the MMC 7.7 but then could not capture to my editing drive (a ntfs drive) because everything was installed to a fat32 drive. ATI claims 8.1 was the fix for that, but you have to have a new ATI CD to install 8.1!

So I did put 7.5 back on for a few days, but tonight I ghosted my boot drive (incase I gotta go back to fat32) and converted it to NTFS.

Now MMC 7.7 seems to be working fine. Installed on the boot drive (C: ) and capturing to the editing drive E:

I have all the settings now, including the 48,000 audio, so we will see how it works. Kid is watching lion king so for the heck of testing I am capturing to mp2 for the first time and will see if it actually works?

Hopefully it will. Kid likes watching stuff like that on her pc for better video and sound than the tv has.

  8. You can do the same thing, faster with one single software: neoDVDPlus.
Just capture directly to DVD, it will capture/encode/author and burn to blank DVD. For a 90mins VHS tape, it will take about 2 hours to complete.

  9. Where would I find that program, how much is it, and does it have a full working version to try before buying it?

How does that work doing it all at once like that? Is it burning as it captures? How would it make the files?? Or does it burn after after everything is done and your figuring a fast burner in that 2 hr? I been burning 1x so that alone is 1hr, course if I run out of disks I will buy 2x next time.

If you got a website for it, I'll look it over and see what they say about, but I always preferr info from others more than from the vender!

And of course those disks it makes are playable on nearly all set top players right. I'm burning -r right now.

    Thanks

  10. Found answers to my first questions in the tools section, however it says trialware but when I click the download link I get I get the site, but no file to download. Looked all over the site, I can not find a trialware/shareware/demo to download. Have they done away with that or did I miss it somehow?? Tools section shows it as trialware, so I geuss it was once anyway?

Sounds good and cheap too, but I find it hard to beleave the program is as great as they claim for $29(standard version) but a simple player costs $49??

Also did a search at download.com and did not find a try it out first version anywhere!

    Thanks

No. The CD is only required to install the DVD player. The rest of it installs fine (hopefully). LS recently had some issues with 8.1 and 8.5 (the guy who's guide I link to). So be warned an 8.x upgrade may turn into a nightmare.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  12. I think I'll stick with the 7.7 now that I got it working. I went ahead and converted my boot/OS drive to ntfs, so now it lets me capture to the NTFS video edting drive again.
As I read it though I thought I needed the new cd to install everything?

The lion king movie for the kid seems to have come out ok too as an mpg2 file this time and I made her a working DVD. Plays in the Computers and Norcent DP300.
Been using a 15 yr old tv and my disks looked as good as the VHS, today I bought a new 20" flat screen tv for the kid for her birthday tommorow. My disks look great on it now! I was a bit worried the new tv would show up problems I hadn't noticed on the old one, but they look great, crisp and clear.

  13. Hi overloaded_ide,
I guess you are looking for neoDVD Plus, this software is NOT available for trial download. It cost 50$ if you buy online and the company that makes it guaranties customer satisfaction. If you are not happy, return it within 30 days for full refund. Here is the link to that place:
    http://www.mediostream.com/products/index.html
Many people here, myself included have transferred lots of VHS tapes onto DVD using this simple software.
I have tried my burned DVDs in many DVD players (mine and my relative's, and friends), they all play fine, no problem.
