Hope you guys can help a complete newb out.

I've just bought a Toshiba SD520E Multi-Region to replace my ageing Proline 1000 The thing is i have 1 DVDR and about 3 VCD's that play in black and white (they were never played on the Proline), the sound is fine, picture quality is fine.

I have some others which were bought at the same time, presumably using the same encoding, and they play fine on both the DVD and PC

The ones that play in B&W play well enough on the PC, no probs

the DVDR does play perfect on the PS2 (don't know if that helps)

    Any help Greatly apprietiated

  2. You are in the UK the video format here is PAL. It sounds like you have some NTSC discs, and perhaps a TV or DVD player that is not compatible with the NTSC format. Is it an old TV set as most modern UK equipment is capable of displaying an NTSC signal correctly.

A disc playing in black and white is the classic sympton of NTSC-PAL hardware incompatability.

as far as i know the DVD can do NTSC (surely it must to be able to be a multi-region player), come to think of it, i can't remember if it does play on the PS2
as for the TV its a Philips 28" Widescreen, with Dolby Prologic (about 3-4 year old) it does have probs playing 60hz games on my dreamcast, (is that NTSC?)

  4. Yes PAL is 25 frames per second, with 2 fields per frame if interlaced (50Hz). NTSC is 29.97 fps with 2 firelds per frame, so just about 60Hz. If your TV is only 4 years old then it should have no problems with NTSC, so it is strange it has problems with the game. Have you checked the back of your DVD player to see if there is a switch to change from PAL to NTSC.

i agree with everyone else probably NTSC format disc

make sure your player is plugged into the main scart socket.
on my tv if you the secondary scart socket ntsc playback is in black and white but in the main scart it is in colour.

    hope this helps

Yup sounds like you are trying to play ntsc games on a pal console or vice versa

You need to patch the game with a ntsc/pal patcher try looking at www.consolecopyworld.com in the utilities section for patches or try a ps2 forum board for a link

Drop me a pm and I can see if I can point you in the right direction

I forgot to add there is a link wire that you can solder that will force color for import games the messiah 2 diagrams have the point listed on their chip install section www.messiah2.com works for all chips or backup booting methods not just Messiah 2

Ahh, sorry Craig (was at work when posting, i got confused)
anyways I have sorted it, The Toshiba 520 has a colour setting you can either set it to PAL or Auto, it was set to Auto, must have thought it was an NTSC when in fact it was PAL, i changed it to PAL and all works fine

As for the PS2 its my brothers and only on loan for a few days/weeks/months/years

Cheers for the help given guys
