  1. I've recently bought a computer that will burn DVDs and was given an older version of Premiere (5.1). My question is should I spend the $150 to upgrade to version 6.5 or use the $$$ to buy something else entirely?

Also, related, will v5.1 do what I need it to do? I've tried using AVIsynth to frameserve with TMPEGenc but 5.1 won't recognize the .mov file. Maybe I don't have AVIsynth installed properly or v5.1 just doesn't recognize the plugin. Either way it won't load the .mov so I can convert to mpeg2.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Have you used the Premier 5.1 that your computer came with? Do you like it? $150 for Premier 6.5 is a good deal seeing that the 5.1 came bundled. In essence you're only paying $150 for Premier 6.5

Not a bad deal for a high end progie.

I use Ulead Media Stuido Pro 6.5 & Pinnacle Studio 8. I've never used Premier but I've heard good things about it.

Premiere 6.5 was light-years beyond even 6.0, so an upgrade from 5.1 will be almost an entirely different program. The new Premiere 6.5 is amazing, and comes with everything you need to make a DVD-compliant MPEG2 video, as it is preloaded with the MainConcept (Adobe MPEG) Encoder. Import your video, edit, and then export with MainConcept. It's a breeze. Forget all that frameseving and other mess. The 6.5/MC combo is faster too.

As far as the problems you're having, you may just not have the TMGenc and AVisynth setup properly, and you've got some codec issues to deal with. I'd go into it more, but it's lunchtime, so I'm off to eat.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  4. Yep, Mr. Tx is right -- go ahead and upgrade and you won't regret it.

MainConcept is worth the upgrade alone.

  5. Let me chime in alongside TX as well with another big thumbs-up for Premiere 6.5

You'll be able to export to MPEG-1, MPEG-2, RealMedia, Windows Media Format, .avi, and more...they even have encoding templates for DVD, VCD, and SVCD, allowing you to do even less thinking!

For $150.00, you won't find a better deal -- and I think P5.6 is worth the retail full-price, as well!

  6. Premiere 6.5 is great. I was able to convert a quicktime movie to mpeg2. I've made nice motion menus for TMPEGEnc DVD. And its great cause I can convert vbr mp3's to mpa's for menu backgrounds. (A lot of other programs refused to accept vbr mp3's.)

  7. Wow! Thanks for all the possitive feedback concerning 6.5. I'll probably go ahead and upgrade eventually. Problem comes down to priorities for funds right now though.

txpharoah: I would be interested in getting some help with setting up AVIsynth and TMPEGenc to get me through until I can justify the $150 for the upgrade. I tried using the guide that talks about converting the .mov to mpeg2. But like I said I'm not sure avisynth is loading as a plugin into tmpeg. Any help there would be appreciated.
