hey, i'm new to the forum! how is it going yall? well enough chit chat. haha! i have a question, but first a little about myself. i'm a 21 yr old surfer from indiana. i enjoy dancing, reading, and all around fun for the whole family i.e. disney movies, wrestling, and watching game show network. as of recently though i've been addicted to a little thing called DVD's; you all might've heard of them. anyways then i found out about a thing called instant copy and being the big geek i am i decided well i better make backups of all my dvd's. so far i've been burning from about 4 months and i haven't had too many problems except for the other day. i was going to make a backup of my Black Adder Collection i got to disc 3 and well...i've had some troubles.

here's the message i've been getting: (Warning: 4.50 GB free disc space required but only 3.43 GB are available Delete files to gain free disc space and press "retry" or "abort" to stop the operation.) BLAH BLAH BLAH!
anybody know what the hell i should do?! it's driving me CRAZY!!! i've tried the only things i know to do which amounts to reinstalling the program over and over and trying different dvdr's. if anybody has had this problem and knows how to fix it let me know. also tell me if i'm a total jackass.

ok, only replies i want are answers to my question. somebody has to know what the f**k i'm supposed to do here. why the hell can't a computer do what you want it to without being dumb. i mean i bought the cookin' why can't i get the goods. did that make any sense? ok, i'll admit i'm not so good w/ making up catch phrases or saying them correctly, but who the hell cares. somebody tell me if i'm being a jackass...no wait somebody tell me what the heck is wrong with my computer! please! ya jackasses!

I think the message you're getting pertains to the available space on your hard disk, or hard drive, and not the DVD disk. You need to get rid of some files on your hard drive. Better yet, you can buy a second hard drive and get a lot more space for your programs and files.

You can get a 160GB Maxtor hard disk for around $100 after rebates.

Lets go the short route here. Yes As previously posted, your message pertains to the available space on your source hard disk (i.e. the one where Instant copy writes the files too). Has nothing to do with your media. Check the available space on your hard drive. Either free up some space on that drive or place your folder in another hardrive that has enough space. But of course you've been using this program for 4 1/2 months and are an expert. Go fix your problem now.

4 1/2 months is a long time but let the IC KING step in and stop all this childish behaviour (which sadly I often see on this forum )

I'll explain it to you simply, you need to make sure that your HD has at least 5Gb of free space (5Gb leaves some for other OS temp files etc) as IC now creates an image on your HD before burning even if you select to burn straight to DVD

p.s. a blank DVD is not 4.5Gb either, its 4.37Gb

here's another problem i've been having: certain DVD's i burn will not play on any DVD player. on my computer it tells me that the disc/file is corrupted. wassup wit dat? my only guess is DVD Decrypter is being dumb w/ certain titles: Futurama disc 1, Black Adder disc 3, and Mr. Bean disc 2. anybody had problems like this or problems w/ these DVD's?

did you actually look at how much free space you have? if you have a DVD-9 dual-layer movie to copy, then it's gonna take up 1) 9 gigs for the original DVD rip and another 2) 4.37 gigs for the compressed version.

if you forgot to delete previous DVD rips from your hdd, then you will easily run out of space.

i recently got in on a deal for the 160 gig Maxtor 7200 rpm 8 mb cache w/ free ATA133 controller card (only $80 after MIR). believe me, even that has seen some hdd space problems. a couple of movies stored on there eats away hdd space like crazy because you need to store both the original and the compressed version, which could easily be near 15 gig/movie

just because you're having problems with it doesn't mean it sucks. i personally use DVDshrink and think it's great, which would suggest i'm not a big IC fan. however, most ppl who do use it find that it works pretty well (not as well as DVDshrink, of course ) so, there's no need to say that a proggie sucks just because YOU have a problem with it.

VERY IMPORTANT you running win98SE??? if you are, then that means your hdd uses FAT32 allocation tables. this does NOT support files over 4 gigs. so, if you need to make an image file (i.e. iso file), then you will run into big problems. for example, if you wanna burn a transcoded DVD that's about 4.3 gigs. if the proggie you use makes an iso file first before burning, the iso file will also be 4.3 gigs. however, since win98SE does not support files >4 gigs, the iso file created by your proggie will be truncated at exactly 3.99 gigs. hence, all the errors you've been getting with your burned DVD-R. if this is the case, i suggest you use a burning proggie that doesn't make an .iso image first, but just burns the files individually on the DVD-R (i.e. nero express works pretty well for me, all the DVD-R's work perfectly on my pioneer dv333 and on my artec 16x DVD-ROM)

one last thing though, have you tried saving it to the HD instead of direct to the DVD and does it still say the same thing?

i do save it to the HD. i didn't think direct to the DVD would work w/ a protected one.

Wow this has gotten way out of hand. Atomic, i do believe what people are trying to say is that your acting like a child. If you want your answer to your problem you must supply people with more details. I have read through all the posts and some people have asked you questions that you have failed to answer. These questions have been asked so that they can help further t-shoot your problem to narrow down what the issue may be.

First off : What O/S you have ?

2nd : Have you checked you drive space ? Like someone else has stated, if you havnt deleted older movies that have been finished then it will be easy to run out of space with only 65 gigs.

3rd : If your problem persists, then reinstall the software. I dont think the reinstall is your answer, i think it has something to do with where your saving your movie to.

4th : Your error is very self explanitory, the place your trying to save your movie to is full and some files need to be deleted from that area.

Well one problem that I encountered that you might also be having is that certain programs use your main boot drive to store TEMP files. So even though you might have a second HDD to where you RIP and have FREE space the program you use (in this case IC) might be trying to store files on your boot HDD which might not have enough space left on it.

I had this problem with an authoring program ... all my files were on my second "D" HDD but the program was making a huge back-up of the files onto my "C" HDD which had only about 3GB left yet it was trying to write the entire VIDEO_TS folder which was close to 4.3GB

So in my case I simply copied some files from my C drive to my D drive to make room on the C drive. Luckily I had plenty of FREE space on D so it was no "biggie" to just MOVE some files over to it.

It really sounds like the error you are getting has SOMETHING to do with your FREE HDD space.

By the way ... you are an annoying **** but you don't have many posts and therefore are a "newbie" here so I have decided to give you the benefit of the doubt ... hence my attempt here to help you.

Can Instant copy be used to copy CSS-encrypted discs?

You should RIP the DVD first to your computer's HDD using a DVD RIPPER program such as DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper (I vote for DVD Decrypter).

Those two RIPPING programs completely remove all forms of copy protection and region coding information in most of the RIPPING modes that they use. In most cases when you are RIPPING a DVD with the need to further process it you would use FILE mode (in DVD Decrypter). Again this will remove ALL copy protection and region coding info.
