I have quite a few older cassettes which I would like to have on CD. Being not that computer savvy in coversion - plus it would just be a heck of a lot easier - would it be illegal for me to download the CD's via Kazaa or what have you? Ex's include Oasis, Hootie and the Blowfish, and U2....

Depends on what country you are in. If its the US, then yes its definitely illegal. This was one of the things ruled on in the Napster case.

Easiest thing to do is go to Half.com -
http://half.ebay.com/products/music/index.cfm
look up the albums you want to replace or add to your collection.
You can find many under a dollar - quite a few as low as .01
Also compare prices with Ebay for better deals.
It's the best and most affordable way to upgrade or replace your collections...and it's 100% legal! -
I love half.com everyonce in a while I'll just raid it for old CDs I don't have anymore. Then poof them into itunes.

If you don't have a cassette stereo, you could probably buy a walkman style unit cheaply ... one with an AC adapter ... and TotalRecorder only costs $12. Analog backup copies don't necessarily sound all that bad ... at least not to me.
