I have a 16x dvd-rom drive, 40gb 7200rpm hard drive (only 15gb free tho lol), a 1.6ghz pentium 4 processor, and 256 ram. Now, why in the WORLD do my DVD's rip at only 2x or slower? (usually between 1x and 1.7x) And yes, ultra DMA is enabled! Nobody can seem to figure this out...I tried smartripper, DVD Decrypter, and DVD2SVCD's internal ripper, all the same, slow speed. And yes, HD is defragmented.

Simple the drive like a lot of DVD drives is locked at 2x. Get a LiteOn DVD drive which is not locked if you want rip speeds up to 15x for single layer DVD's.

#1: This is NOT the problem, I just updated the drive's firmware and it now goes up to 3.3x (which is still slow, so I still need a solution!)
#2: Dont try to sell me DVD drives, lol-Yar, matey!- -
let's see if I understand... your drive rips slow, so someone suggests you get a drive that rips faster, but you don't want anyone to "sell you a drive"...
so what do you want, exactly?
if your firmware upgrade only gets you to 3.3x, you can either limp along at 3.3, or you can get another drive that will go faster.
Unless you'd like to buy some magic ripping beans from me... only $300, they'll make your drive so fast, you'll be done ripping before you insert the disc....- housepig

lol, i didnt mean it that way. I know my drive can go up to at LEAST 12x, because it used to do it....but then it suddenly stopped. I dont know what I did to make it slow down

Anyone have any ideas? Im confused...why would it be doing this

I can't give you an answer, but my drive (a Samsung 48X24X48X16 Combo drive) and I used to be able to rip DVDs at about 3x-12X (depending on the where on the DVD the drive is ripping from). Two days ago it droped to 2x max. I can't find anything wrong, if I do I'll be sure to post.

which drive is it? i.e. brand and model number...i had this happen to my aopen drive so I used a compatible pioneer firmware and the problem was fixed...until i tried reading a friend of mine's bogus maxwell dvd-r which actually seemed to hose it again...so I went back to the origional firmware and the problem was fixed again...go figure

Have you changed any IDE cables since it was working fast?
Do you have your HD and DVD on same channel? All I've got in this world is my balls and my word.....
and I don't break them for no one! -
I love this place, check out the thread below. I did it and I'm back to ripping just like before. Basicly you just delete the primary and secondary IDE controllers in device manager and reboot (in my case reboot twice). Windows will re-install the drivers for the IDE controllers and refind your CD/DVD drives. Let us know if this works for you.

i have a liteon dvd drive and use smart ripper as well as dvd-svcd programs and it rips between 6 to 8x without fail so it could be your drive

What does it mean a drive is locked at 2x? I thought it's supposed to be a 16x drive. I also have a problem with SmartRipper and Decrypter ripping at less than 3x, and it fluctuates greatly from one second to the next. It's a Mad Dog drive from CompUSA. It has never exceeded 3x, and I've already tried deleteing the IDE channels from Device Manager and let it re-install. Is the Mad Dog drive based on Lite-on or something I can upgrade my firmware? Mad Dog's web site doesn't have any upgrades. DMA is turned on.
My computer is an Athlon XP2000 running Win ME, Gigabyte 7VAXP motherboard (has RAID, but I'm not using it). 2 80gb harddrives are on channel 1 and cdrw and dvd are on channel 2. -
some manufacturers lock their dvd-rom's ripping speeds to 2x to prevent us ppl from ripping.
ripping speeds can vary: 1) dvd-rom's been overused and is just simply a sign of wear and tear (simply put, it's gettin' old) 2) dvd being ripped is in bad shape...even if you thought u cleaned it, it probably still isn't clean enough 3) which proggie you use can also affect it. for me, it seems smartripper rips at faster speed than dvddecryptor, but i still use dvddecryptor because i personally think it's better for ripping to DVD-R.
other things to consider:
dma?
secondary, primary IDE?
hooked to a controller card or on the mobo?
aspi?
