  1. I have an ADVC-100 box, and I am using an cheap pinnacle card I had lying around. The captures are great and everything works but can anyone shed some light on the advanages of having an EZDV Canopus card over my pinnacle?

I understand that using a Canopus DV Card I can play pack an AVI file on my pc and it will feed the avi out through my analogue outputs on my ADVC-100. Is this true?

Also I heard that the Canopus DV Codec can only capture upto an hour at a time. True or false...

    Thanks for your help...

    - You can play back DV->analog video though the ADVC with any firewire card that will recognize it, including the one you are already using.

    - The ADVC is definitely NOT limited to an hour - I've captured over three hours in one AVI. Premiere didn't like it too much (it only has a two hour timeline) but the AVI was good. I regularly capture 2+ hours.

So basically, as long as you hook your ADVC up to your firewire card and it recognizes it (which yours obviously has) then you're good to go. No need for a different card for any reason.

The EZDV comes with various pieces of software for capture and editing. I didn't find it particualrly user friendly so I havn't bothered using it much, other than for standard capture. The card is only usable with the included software so other capture software will not recognise the card. The captured AVI is a reference AVI which means that it is split up into 4Meg seperate files (I think that means you cannot rename the files or move them, but I may be corrected). The only advantages I can think of are that the AVI are type 2 (so they can be opened in Virtualdub) and are labled with the Canopus codec (which is one of the best).
I have the EZDV because it was free/bundled with the ADVC-100, I wouldn't buy it.

On that basis... Is there a dv card or software that will allow me to play an avi file on my pc that can feed it through the analogue outputs of my ADVC-100 and onto a monitor?

  5. I don't know about a PC card that can do it (play DV AVI and output analog out) but most Digital Camcorder does it.
You play AVI on the PC using some software like PS8 (not WMP), output DV to the DigCam and it has analog output which can be connected to TV, VCR ...

I use Adobe Premier to output but I imagine the most basic of software should allow you to output through your firewire and the ADVC100.

The EZDV sucks when you are using the ADVC100. There is no advantage because you already use the Canopus codecs with the ADVC100. Got mine free with the ADVC100 as well and sold it.

I'm confused. Why do you need a capture card if you are using the Canopus ADVC100. I thought the ADVC100 does the capture. Is this not true?

I realize that you need capturing software, but why do you need a capture card?

Do you mean a firewire card for connectivity purposes?
