I am in the market for a portable DVD player that is pretty much compatible with anything: DVD, DVD-R, VCD, SVCDs and the like and a decent price.
Any suggestions? I used the search feature but only found mostly older posts about older models. Thanks in advance.

I was considering getting one of those, but after thinking hard about it, I decided to just get a laptop. It's just a little more expensive, and the screen is twice the size. It will also play anything that I throw at it. If you're absolutely set on getting one, take a couple of SVCDs, DVD-Rs, etc. to a best buy or circuit city and give them a whirl.

I have a Cyberhome (model CH-DVD 500) and it does excellent PAL to NTSC conversion. This is of course a "standard" home unit but Cyberhome just came out with a new portable.
The model number of the new portable is CH-LDV 712
It has a 7" 16x9 LCD screen. There is a remote control "hack" that can make it region free. It can play both NTSC and PAL but I'm not sure if it handles PAL to NTSC as well as my CH-DVD 500
I'm trying to find more info about it but right now I don't have much otherthan what is on the Cyberhome website and the Nerd-Out forums (which is very little).
Here is the LINK to the Cyberhome website:

Here is a LINK to the NERD-OUT message forums. Look for the Cyberhome forum. There you will find a STICKY post about region free and how to do it.

Please note that you can buy the CH-LDV 712 directly from the Cyberhome website but I have heard that at least some Radio Shack stores are selling it as well.

P.S.
The CH-LDV 712 portable is the only progressive scan DVD player that Cyberhome makes OTHERTHAN the CH-DVD 500 so I am guessing that the CH-LDV 712 handles PAL conversion as well as the CH-DVD 500 but of course I haven't been able to confirm this yet."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

I own a Philips 701, it plays all 4 formats without any problems. It plays even my own home movies in vcd format as well. I use sony dvd-+rw, sony+r, memorex-r, hypermedia +rw,fujifilm +r,compusa -r. I bought the model about 2years ago at target for $160 US. It goes into standby mode
press the number and it will take you to that chapter in the dvd. Slow, super slow motion. I like and would recommend it to anyone. -
Mintek's portable is great for this. SVCD, VCD, DVD-R, PAL, NTSC, all for 200 bucks. Very good player, just the screen's quailty isn't the best but for the price it's good.
Mintek MDP-5860 I believe is the model number.
