Before I point you to the left hand column in the how-to guides, let me steer you in the right direction....

First, you say you have DVD's, and you want to turn them into Divx .AVI's?? You have a DVD rom/burner?? Okay, if that's what you want, then fine.

Leave your capture card in the box, and put a goldfish bowl on your standalone, because here's the surprise....You don't need them. DVDs get RIPPED (off your DVD rom), and Analogue sources get captured..

Now, here's where you go to the left hand column and learn how to rip and backup. I just downloaded DVDshrink 2.0. I've never ripped, EVER, and I don't have time to learn some of the stuff that the wizards on this forum know, but let me tell you, DVDshrink is a simple GUI that let's even a beginner like me backup DVDs......
If you have your heart content on making Divx, Xvid, or another one of these .AVI formats of some kind, then the guides are very helpful..

    Good luck....

I'm assuming you're talking about the connections on your computer.

Video In is an input jack to get analog video into your computer.

Video Out lets you play video from your computer into an external device (like a VCR)

Audio In and Audio out are the same things, but for sound.

beyond that, you need to look at the How To: sections at the left side of this site, specifically the DVD Rip and Convert sections. For recommended software, check the Tools section.
