  1. is it necessary for DVD-Rs / CD-Rs to be stored in jewel cases ? Or can they be kept in a pocket type sleeve sheets in a three ring binder ?

I hear rumours that this media can warp easily but I don't know if it's true. I'm leaning towards the pocket sheets as they would not need as much space to store....

    Thoughts ?

Scratches are the biggest issue. Sleeves/wallets scratch, DVD cases don't. See that lip in the case? That's why. Jewel cases fine too.

If you find velvet-like material in a sleeve/wallet, those usually don't scratch as much or as bad as the normal cases. But they're also more expensive. Hard wallets may be best if you need a DVD wallet.

And the warping issues can happen from putting weight on wallets/sleeves (or using a case so think that it weights itself down. I stack my 100-discs wallets on the side - weight doesn't press on the discs that way. That's for CD though. A scratched CD is not as bad as a scratched DVD. Bad DVD cases, especially cheap ones, can warp discs too if the lips are curved.

Paper sleeves are okay too, but don't offer much protection unless you put them inside an old 5 1/4 floppy case. That's if you've been around computers as long as I have and just happen to have some lying arond. Great for CD/DVD storage. Finally a use for them!
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

I kept a bunch of old 5 1/4 trays and boxes, I don't know why, but they're useful now!

  4. So can I assume, keeping DVDs or CDs in a sheet envelopes is not a good idea ?

  5. I store my DVD's in two zippered sleeve binders that hold 208 discs each ($30 each at CompUSA). So far I have yet to have any problems and I really like this method as it saves a ton of space and it's easy to locate any DVD I want to play.
