  1. Im a newbie. Hope someone would be kind enough to help me.
Can someone pls advice a remedy for this? Movies I capture on my pc then burn on vcd is clear but jerky - more so during scenes where I pan the digicam.
Fyi, I'm using a Sony TRV22 digicam, Pinnacle to convert to avi(using the dv encoder) then tmpgenc to convert to mpeg1(720x480, 29.97fps, NTSC 4:3:525 44.1kHz 224kbits/sec setting) before I burn to vcd using Nero.
Clarity of movies are great but the jerks are a real eye sore(literally giving me a headache actually). Any recommendations? Different combination of software or settings maybe?
Pc wise I am running Windows XP on a p4 1.5GHz, Geforce4 MX440 64DDR, 384 SDRAM, 40G HD and firewire transfer whilst recording the data to my pc with windows movie maker. Any recommendation to a better combination?
Thanks in advance for your kind help&advice.

You must use the VCD-template of TMPGenc!
Just encoding to MPeG-1 isn't enough.

    Btw. VCD is at 352x240 at a bitrate of 1150kbps (audio -> layer-2 224kbps).
If your source is DV, why not encoding to SVCD which is at 480x480 and a max bitrate at 2520 (MPeG-2, either CBR or VBR), audio is the same as with VCD. Though I'm not sure whether Nero is already up-2-date for accepting/creating SVCD.

  3. Nero can create and burn Svcd's, however I have noticed an increasing lack of quality as of late from them. Now using TMPGenc Pro to encode and Ulead MF2 to burn my quality has gone way up. I think it might be in the bitrate settings. I am not sure if you can adjust Nero to accept and faithfully reproduce 2 pass vbr SVDC's without it messing with it somehow. If anyone has any knowledge of if it can be configured let me know as well.

  4. Thanks for your response.
Pls forgive my ignorance I'm really really new at this, but this VCD-template of TMPGenc, is it some sort of plug in for TMPGenc? Fyi, Im using TMPGenc Version 2.02. Is the VCD-template available with the newer version of TMPGenc or is it acquired separately?
Am I correct to understand that the following steps for non jerky vcd/svcd are as follows :
    1) avi(either convert or acquire data in this format)
    2) use VCD-template of TMPGenc
    3) tmpgenc to convert to mpeg1
    4) burn to vcd or svcd
    in that order?
Actually I have two sources : trv22 camcorder and canon A40 digicam
Video quality of the canon is smooth but blurred. However, the pics(I alternately put stills and video in my projects) viewed on the vcd burn on the settings I use is super sharp but I can only play on my dvd player. It doen't seem to be able to output on my vcd player properly(this I believe to be due to the 720x480 which is dvd setting right?)
On the other hand, the video quality of the videocam is great but jerky

Thus, is there anyway I can retain the settings I am currently using(becos I love the stills quality it produces on tv) whilst doing something to eliminate the jerkiness of the videocam data burned?

Finally, can I burn SVCD on a blank cdr 700MB disc using a CDRW drive or do I have to use a different disk/burner like in the case of DVD?

Thanks in advance for your help. I really appreciate it.

  5. Sorry, scrap the last part of my question. I've found out that data can be written in all formats(vcd, svcd&dvd) on a normal CDR, only difference is the no of mins the CDR holds for each format differs. Burning wise, DVD need a DVD writer whereas VCD&SVCD can use CD writer. If my understanding is incorrect please let me know.
As for the rest, I look forward to any advice.
    Thanks in advance.

  6. Correct indeed. My personal experience has been to use Virtualdub to extract the audio portion of the avi or whatever video file type, then use TMPGenc to put the audio wave and the video back together and encode, then burn. For myself it gets rid of the audio sync problems.

  7. Thanks for the advice mmmbeer.
Fyi, after numerous attempts I finally managed to get a reasonable capture from the camcorder using ImageMixer. Sharpness not that great but since it's slightly more smoother(thus less eyesore)so I guess I'll just have to be content with it for now(until a better solution comes along that is). However, I am now having audio sync problems so I'll give your advice a shot. Wish me luck!

  8. Virtualdub says "AVI: type-1 DV file detected. Virtualdub cannot extract audio from this type of interleaved stream" Is there anything else I can use to extract the wav?

    You propperly haven't installed a DV-codec.
I thought the one of Microsoft is free, but you must install it seperately.

Those templates, you mentioned before, can be set using the "Load" button at the bottom of the program. You must then go the template-dir of TMPGenc (unless you come ther automaticly) and then select a template which fits you best. If your source is NTSC then either pick a template for SVCD or VCD for NTSC, otherwise use a PAL template.
