Somebody will probably think I am an ass, but still fairly new to this. I am capture uncompressed from a Hi8 composite input into an Nvidia Ti200 video in. I seem to be able tp capture upto 352x576 Ok but when AVI is played on PC or TV output I get flickering images when somone walks past the camera for instance (horizontal motion). I am assuming that I am getting both fields and that it should playback smoothly. Is this just the card or can someone point out what i am doing wrong. Help!

Try 352x288, maybe is an interlacing effect. I capture from Hi8 at a resolution of 480x288 and resize to 480x576 (scvd Pal) while encoding; this way you just double pixels in one direction. The result is better than capturing at 480x576 and then using deinterlace filters. Of course this depends on the capture card, I use a Pinnacle PCTV.

It sounds like you're using a TV-OUT on your video card to watch the AVI. This would cause the effects you are seeing, because your PC's video is progressive and your TV's video is interlaced. In that case, discarding one of the fields should help.
If you're thinking of producing a DVD from the AVI, then capturing both fields would be the way to go.
