I have an AVI (656x288) that when I view it on my desktop the proportions are fine. But when I useTMPGEnc to (convert ?) it to an mpeg, the whole movie becomes stretched...long faces/bodies.
I then put the 656x288 settings in TMPGEnc and converted the file. But when I tried to use TMPGEnc DVD Author, it informed me that the file could not be used.
My question: is there a program that can convert these file from 656x288 or other different dimensions to 704x480 or 720x480?

you have to use full screen (keep aspect ratio) or else it will stretch the movie. 656x288 is not a legal resolution. that's why it doesn't accept the file.

I want the movie streched, as it is now, the movie is too high top to bottom, and not wide enough. Problem is that when I try to make it wider, the resulting file is unusable.

You could always use the resize filter/option in VirDub. Just make the video wider, but keep the height.

Goatview you need to do more reading and less typing. Your way too close to getting flamed. The image you get IS being stretched to fit a 4:3 frame size. Use the "full screen(keep aspect ratio)" option in TMPGenc and shut up already. This will fix your problem if you're encoding to proper DVD ratio of 720x480. You are so obviously new to this... so some will be forgiving but others wont.
