  1. hi,
i have been searching for conversion and catpuring guides which would allow me to capture and then finally to convert my VHS tapes in to SVCD which i then can play on my DVD stand alone.
I have looked around the site but the guides didnt help me a lot.
since i do have some knowledge i only need to know what basic things i need to do, such as how to connect the vcr with my pc, or how to do the minor things. the converting itself should be no problem for me since i already did often enough with normal avis, just the setting up!!! appreciate help
    thx

  2. tommybs - it says in your PC specs that you don't have a capture card.

without one you're going to find it pretty hard to connect your VCR to the PC!

if you don't have one, have a look at the capture cards section of this site. You can get a basic one based on the BT8x8 chip very cheaply. It's not exactly the latest technology, and don't expect AMAZING quality, but there's lots of freeware capture stuff which supports the chip, and the quality is adequate if you're converting to VCD etc..

a very basic summary of what you will need to do is this:

    1. Connect your VCR to the PC with a capture card - a simple way of connecting them is with a cable with 3 phono plugs on it - the VCR should have left + right audio out (white and red jacks) and composite video out (yellow jack) - if it doesn't you can get adaptors to change scart out sockets to the appropriate connectors. Depending on your capture card, you may be able to connect all 3 to the capture card, or you may have to connect the audio cables to your sound card. s-vhs (which looks a little like a ps2 mouse/keyboard connector) is another option for analogue capture.

    2. Select some good software for capturing which is compatible with your capture card. Look in the tools section of this site.

    3. Capture at your chosen resolution, and with your chosen codec (look at the capture guides.) the resolution and compression you use will depend on the compatibility of your hardware, the disc space you have available, the speed of your system, and the format you wish to end up with.

    4. Convert, Author etc.. (you say you know about this bit).

That should get you started I hope.

    cheers,
    mcdruid.
