Hi everybody,
I'm using Virtual Dub 1.4.7 on a P4 with the ATI All in Wonder for capturing AVI from my multi system VCR.
Some VHS works fine, some not.
The ones that don't work are flickering even when I'm not capturing. They play fine on TV. It look like a Macrovision protection problem but it's not, because those VHS are my own concerts movies. I've tried to update the MMC and the Capture drivers but got the same problem.
It look like this : (VHS in NTSC) :![]()

Anybody know how to fix this ?
Thank You

It looks like the video is interlaced, select De-interlace in your settings.

I had a similar problem with PAL VHS.
On TV the picture was good, through the AIW came out bad.
The problem went away with a different (and newer) VHS recorder.
Try to borrow it from a friend or a relative just to test.
Hope it helps.

I'm having the same problem with a few of my vhs tapes as well!
I've tried to uninstall and reinstall EVERYTHING, downloaded the macrovision patch(which these tapes are NOT recorded in)
set my controls to "deinterlace"
tried 4 different VCRs
same thing!
the picture looks fine on my VCR playing thru the TV but when I hook it up to the computer I get this garbled BS on a bunch of my tapes!! -
I've had the exact same problem here for a while now, a VHS tape twists and distorts in random places on the computer or in a capture, but you never see it on the television.....and I noticed it always happens in the exact same spots on the tape as well. I have the ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500 DV, and using the MMC to capture, and I was using an old VCR with composite inputs, so I got a new JVC S-VHS VCR with S-Video connections, hoping that would solve this problem. And while the new VCR with S-Video gave me a number of benefits, it did not stop this distortion in the picture from occuring. It'd be really awesome if someone could figure this out, nobody seems to have the solution

I've sent an email to ATI technical support. They suggest me to try another VCR, but they don't really care
I wrote :
Regarding "My VHS are NOT copywrite protected, I told you they are my own concert recording.
And those tapes are not old at all, the quality is not degraded. They play fine on TV.
Try another VCR ? maybe a cheaper one would work. A $800 CAN VCR doesn't seem to work, maybe a $99 VCR from Zellers would work. If that's the case, it probably means that your ATI card is not compatible with all VCRs and people who buy your card should be aware ! If I knew that I should buy another VCR, I would never buy this ATI All in Wonder card, I would rather buy another more expensive brand of capture card.”
ATI answers:
We have made suggestions from the info you have provided, and to try or not to try them is your prerogative.
From the info you have provided it seems Macrovision is startup and detecting some kind of copyright.

I've rent another VCR and still have the same problem....I feel like I've been ripped off. I can't transfer 75% of my VHS !!! I wouldn't suggest ATI products to anyone...

If you can capture an off the air signal (which is always time base corrected) with no problem, then you're going to need a TBC (Time Base Corrector). The reason your VCR tape plays ok on your TV is because the TV can handle the sloppy horizontal sync pulses the VCR puts out. Video capture cards are less forgiving.
I did a google search for "data video tbc 100" and found one for about $225. It's a TBC on a PCI card. There maybe cheaper ones out there.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your answer !
I wish ATI buy me a Time base corrector since the problem affect 75% of my tapes...
I also tried to buy an RCA-Svideo cable and plug it into in the s-video input...but got the same problemIt's Only Rock'n'Roll but I like it ! -
good lord!
I've been exchanging emails for the past day with ATI and I'm trying to explain to them about the "timebase correction" theory and they just think I have no idea what I'm talking about -
well, after many email swaps with ATI, they NOW tell me that the problem is with our VCRS and NOT their card.
even though I use to use a Dazzle DVC device and NEVER had this problem with it.
ATI rocks! -
If anyone of us DOES get one of these TBC's before I do, would you please post the results and tell whether or not it has helped, or, god forbid, SOLVED the problem.
Either way, thanks for all of the input thus far, even if it is looking pretty grim...Doc, AKA dalek7

The Solution.....!!!!!
I have had the same problems on a Ati all in wonder Radeon and also Allinwonder Radeon 8500DV .
I tried Playing the tapes in different vcr`s and also got the same problem using laserdisk, but also got ` bright flashing`
the problem is the chipset on your motherboard.
Download and run: Via 4in1 drivers
from:

This cured my problem after 6 months of tearing my hair out!!
Ati technical support is pants, but a telephone call to Hercules.com, who now support this card knew about the problem, and had the solution in minutes!. -
I'm downloading this now (and hoping it's easy enough to install for someone as PC illiterate as I really am)... Thanks for the heads up eaither way. This works it'll be awesome
Thanks!Doc, AKA dalek7

Well, I downloaded and quick-installed that 4in1 driver, and the same problem still occurs with at least one of the tapes.
I have an ATI AIW Radeon 7500. Any ideas as to whom to contact to find out what else might work, or why what works on your 8500 doesn't seem to work on my 7500? What made you contact Hercules.com? How? Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated....Doc, AKA dalek7

This has def sorted the problem for me.
Maybe you have a different chipset on your motherboard (i`m using ABIT)
I contacted Hercules.com, because after millions of unanswered emails to ATI i telephoned them, who said that support for this card had now been transferred to Hercules.
I got the phone number from there website, and they were very helpful. (at least they acknowledged that there was a problem) try calling them yourself.

good luck. -

Looking forward to it... please keep us updated

Whew, I was starting to think I was crazy because I'm experiencing the same problems.
Nice to know someone else is too.
Anyway, from reading some of the posts it sounds like it's related to the card. What about trying another capture card. I hate to spend the money but it sounds like ATI isn't going to do anything about it.
Does this problem happen with other capture cards??
Gotta tell 'ya. I don't know what I'd do without all the help I get from these forums.
Thanks all!! -
I have the AIW 8500 128meg and when i try to record from the vcr i get a constant loop in video of about .5 seconds and a good audio. Hope someone can get a sulution.

rosebud6: That's macrovision protection. You might want to track down the macrovision remover. It seems that some configurations can produce fals triggers for the macrovision protection with old VHS tapes.
-
rosebud6,
If you're using MMC 7.5 or 7.6 d/l Stinkys regtool(it includes macro.removal)www.vcdhelp.com/download/MMC_7.5_7.6_Reg_Tool_Final.rar
or go to www.doom9.org -
In the meantime, I am STILL experiencing the initial problem of that video noise on only particular VHS tapes when trying to capture (see above)... has anyone found any further alternative solutions for this yet? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated...

Well, this is a lousy solution but at least it's a workaround. Here's what I ended up doing.
I hook up my vcr to my digital video camera. Record the tape onto my video camera and then hook up my camera usinga firewire connection to the ATI card and capture it that way.
The flickering is gone. I can't tell for sure (original VCR tapes are several years old and have been viewed alot) but it doesn't look like I'm losing much quality.
The big pain is the time it takes!
I'd still like to hear the solution to the original problem if anyone ever finds one.
Thanks everyone for the great posts! This forum is great. Don't know how I'd figure this stuff out without all the great stuff I find here. -
I also had the same problems capturing VHS tapes through my Hauppage WinTV card. Some tapes were fine, with others there was no signal at all while everything looked ok on TV.
Recently I bought a DV camcorder with analogue pass-through. I now capture good quality through the camera over Firewire to my PC.
I guess capturing cards need better sync signals than TV's and camcorders. -
I am kind of new to capturing. What is MMC 7.5 or 7.6? also could anyone give me a little more info on macrovision protection and how to get around it.
