Hi all,
I finally succumbed and bought a burner, a Panasonic SW-9581 to be exact.![]()
The only trouble is i'm not convinced it's working properly![]()
I can't get it to blank a a previously used cd-rw, neither can i get it to format a dvd-ram disc.
The errors i get for the cd-rw, using Nero, are :
"illegal block size for command" and / or "power calibration failure"
For the dvd-ram disc, using the software from the panny site, it starts ok, but after 34seconds (it's what it says on the screen !), it fails and says :
"cannot format disc. confirm disc and try again"
I've managed to burn a cd-r from an iso image, it reads cd's and dvd's ok.
I'm in the process of burning a dvd-r so i dont know if that works yet.....
does this seem correct, or does it look like the drive is duff ??
** right i've burn't a dvd-r, which worked. however, the panny drive wont recognise the disc again ! just says drive i/o error if you try to read it![]()

I assume this is the SW-9581? I’m no expert as I have only had mine a few days and have not tried a CD-RW in it yet!
I had a different problem I could only format RAM disks to UDF 1.5. Solved since I deleted Direct CD! Now I have to find some other software to format CD-RW & DVD-RW! disks, does it really have to be this complicated?
Look here for manual, updated drivers etc : http://panasonic.jp/dvdram/english/
I also downloaded the pdf manual for the Panasonic LF-D521 (basically just the retail version of this drive) over 6mb but well worth getting as it explains that to use RAM disks you have to turn off CD writing in the properties of the drive, reboot etc etc. Get the manual here : http://panasonic.jp/dvdram/english/inst/index.html
I suspect I downloaded the same ancient driver from the Panasonic website that you did “XP222ONE.EXE” try getting the latest “Multi Drive” driver “XPDrvUpdate3080NEN.exe”. Download it from here : http://panasonic.jp/dvdram/english/softdl/driver/lf500drvxp.html
I like the drive and it works well (copied to DVD-R & RAM) but what a pain to have to reboot and change settings just to use CD-R/RW disks! -
yes that's the drive.
I'll follow your advice and give it a go.
Cheers !
I'll let you know how I get on -
Hi ShotsFan,
I downloaded the new drivers etc, but it's made no differnce. I still can't erase cdrw's, format my dvd-ram disc or get it to re-read dvd-r's that i've burnt. Although my old Hitachi dvd-rom reads them fine (and my old Teac cd re-writer will happy blank the cd-rw's.
i've mailed the company i bought it from, so it looks like i'll have to change it. grrrrrrr -
I had nothing my probs with mine, couldnt recognise most of my DVD-R blanks nor even my Panasonic DVD RAM discs, n when i did get one to work, it couldnt be read by my panny dmr e30 recorder and i had great difficulty formatting it so it would work again, eventually it went back and i got the Pioneer 105 !
