Whoa, that's wiiiierd. Is it all set up right, you sure? And what's the DVD? VOBs ripped ok, disc clean? (don't lets say someones come up with a subpicture rip-blocking encryption scheme now..)

Odd thing is I had similar (but not exactly the same) kind of trouble with another program VOBSE, which prompted me to try SubRip instead and I haven't yet looked back. Perhaps you could give VOBSE a try and maybe that'll fix?

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

I use VobSub and just let it extract the sub info from the ripped DVD files.
Give that a try if all else fails. works fine for me

In VobSub Configure you browse for the IFO file. It finds what subtitles there are, you choose which ones you want and it produces a sub and idx file.

I have to use VirtualDub with the Vobsub filter to frameserve the video and subtitles to TMPGE for encoding.

In VirtualDub you turn on the VobSub filter, browse for the sub file previously created and hit OK. Then just turn on FrameServing.
Open TMPGE and load the Frameserving target and do the rest like normal.

It turned out reasonably easy. If you don't mind a few extra steps throm in.

subrip only works on unencrypted VOBs. If you are trying to run it directly off the DVD it probably won't work because nearly all DVDs are encrypted. Try ripping the VOBs to your hard drive and then see if subrip works.

Try the "DVD RIP" link under "HOW TO" over at the left of every page on this site. That page has guides that cover all the common tools.
