  1. Dear all.
First I have to say I love this site because it alreday saved me a lot of time and helped me with almost all problems I had with video creation and playing. But now I got stuck.

I could ask simply the same question that appears in the forum just few days ago: "Where to download MPEG-2 codec?" but I would like to provide more details hoping I will get an answer closer to my expectation.

    Let's go!

I was able to create high quality video in MPEG-2 format using TMPGEnc and play it on TV using WM Player. The only problem I had was that almost every 20 secs I got jerky frames for about 5secs independent from the content of video. I used MPEG-2 in the system format (video + audio). Then I read an article about TMPGEnc is not perfect with encoding video + audio so I created them separately (m2v and mp2). Then I tried to play m2v only and YES - m2v was played without any jerky frames.

But then I made a wrong decision. I thought it is a problem of my codec and I tried to search for another codecs on the Internet. And I have found: Elegard MPEG-2 codec (Demo) and SLDcodepack 1.5 (free). I tried both but the result was worse than my previous codec. And now the point. After uninstallation of those products I am not able to see MPEG via my old lovely codec anymore.

I tried almost everything. Re-install all my video related software, re-install graphic card drivers, DVD player, everything but my old codec is lost. Of course I don't know where I got it from. It is probably still on my
computer but mpeg splitter does not take it in account. You know sometimes codec remains on your computer even if you properly uninstall a product providing it. I also tried Re-clock, I really spent couple of days on it. Without success.

Please can anybody help me to find a MPEG-2 codec that does not play with those ugly jerky frames? What I mean by jerky frames? If there are objects on the video and the camera moves left (right) you should see smooth movement. But I see jerky movement with smeary edges. Most TV films also do jerky frames but I do my own video with the DV camera exporting into VBR 8000kbps high resolution video in DVD quality and I already saw it is possible to get rid of those jerky frames on my hardware.

I would appreciate any help, any suggestion, any experience with high quality video. I just want to say, any DivX, XVid, etc. MPEG-4 formats, any AVI, DV AVI, etc. provide jerky frames on the TV. Only MPEG-2 was fine. Or do I do something wrong generally?

Some more information about my equipment:
    • - Capture, video editing, DV AVI exporting via Premire 6.0
      - DV conversion via Canopus DV converter
      - MPEG-2 encoding via TMPGEnc
      - Playing via WM Player
      - DVD Player 4.0 installed
      - Computer: 2.54 GHz, ATI Radeon 9000 with TV Output
      - TV PAL
      - what else?

    Thank you!
    Martin

  2. O.K. nobody answered but I continued searching and I have additional information.

I used EditGraph to see what filters are loaded and then I tried to find another combination that would work fine.

I have found filters on my machine from ULead they cannot be instantiated (ULead MPEG Splitter, ULead MPEG Video Decoder). AX files are on the correct place, registerred but no instance can be created (E_OUTOFMEMORY).

Maybe ULead filters were those that provided the super MPEG2 video quality. But now the cannot be instantiated so I can never reach the same quality. Just a remainder: Installation of Elegard MPEG 2 decoder or SLD_codepack1.5 damaged my codec.

Any idea? Missing DLL acidently uninstalled by those codecs but needed with ULead codecs?

    Thanks!

i was having a similar problem on my HTPC, but i found a good solution. find a copy of powerDVD (think i've got XP4 or something) and use that, it can play mpeg files as well as DVD's, and it does a great job! not sure about it's ability for AVI or DV (don't remember if i tried) but for MPEG and DVD it's excellent.

  4. Thank you. I am pretty sure I did not use PowerDVD before but I'll try it next week.

Just reinstall your DVD player software. CODECS don't like to co-exist and often fight to be the top dog. I have had to do a "clean sweep" and reinstall my MPEG2 codec (I use PowerDVD) more than once after I experimented with other CODECS. I don't do this any more, as I find the PowerDVD codec to be about the best there is.
