  1. I am in the process of moving from PC to Mac, the main stumbling block is a DVD Ripper.

I read that OSEx is not very good, and DVD Backup will not work it always says 'Copying file Without Decryption'.

Does anyone have any ideas, and yes I did open the DVD with the DVD Player first.

If I got Virtual PC would I be able to run the PC DVD Decrypter?

    Thanks

If dvd backup is not working you could use the program in virtual pc.

It would be worth investigating why its not working properly.
Do you have the latest version?
Do you have any scratches on the DVD?
Do you have enough HD space for the backup to complete?
Did you try OSeX (it sometimes works)?
Did you try copying the DVD itself to your HD using the OPTION-DRAG which will copy the dvd as a folder to your HD? then selecting that folder with DVD BACKUP?

These are just a few of the things that can cause errors.
Typically DVDBackup works with no errors.

Try some of those and see what works.
if all else fails, go ahead and run the PC program in VPC if you have it

Are you using the latest version (version 1.3)? You can get it here: http://195.134.134.27/downloads/macdvd/DVDBackup_13.bin

  4. I think that the "copying file without decryption" message in DVD Backup simply means that the source DVD has no CSS scramble key that needed decoding. I have seen this message on a number of discs and they've all worked fine. Are you having problems with these files, and if so, what kind?

Although some people don't care for OSeX, it does work well, and is also an excellent program for ripping individual titles or chapters.

Most of us use these programs frequently and with great success. They are a lot simpler (and cheaper) than buying and installing Virtual PC, if this is the only task you'd need VPc for.

  5. I do have version 1.3, I've never let it finish as I though it was not working - although I doubt the DVD does not have CCS protection.

I will let it complete and see if the DVD plays.

I take it your letting the DVD startup with apples DVd player, and let it run for awhile, do this while DVD Backup is open, I had all kind of problems with dvd backup not working and giving errors, but since I did this it works perfect.
    Hope this helps./.

  7. I just let the whole movie go, I tried to open the output with the Apple DVD player - there is audio but no video.

I will try the method kwasnicki posted next.

  8. No luck, still says copying without decryption.

  9. Are you actually getting an error message that stops the copy process?

If it proceeds normally, yes, with the message that it is copying without decryption, then everything is fine. Some disks are not encrypted in this way. What you are reporting is normal procedure for DVD Backup.

Let it transfer the files onto your hard drive.

Then run whatever process you want on the files it creates.

When I run across a problem DVD I use OSEx in the DVD Image mode. It's never failed (except HERE), you need to mount the Image with Toast. I did have a problem after using DVD Image mode where DVD2one 1.1.1(PC, before the Mac version) wouldn't do the Diskcopy, it would only work in the movie mode. That was one DVD out of a hundred. With the exception of the non-encrypted data bug noted earlier, I haven't had a problem with Mac Rippers. And I was using Mac Rippers with the PC version of DVD2one before DVD2oneX came out.

I really don't understand the bitching about 0SEx at all. I think it's a great app, I've never had any problem with it. Plus if you want to author the DVD yourself in DVDSP or Sizzle you need the elementary streams that DVDBackup won't give you. I only use DVDBackup in the very few cases when 0SEx can't rip a disk because it's enhanced, meaning there's more stuff on it than just the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders.
