  1. I have an ATI All-In-Wonder 128 (NOT PRO - 16MB, AGP2x). I am running MMC 7.1 under Win98SE. I have a 600MHz Duron system with the VIA KT133 chipset. 192MB PC133 SDRAM.

My problem is as follows: I want to capture mpeg2 files that can be burned to a compliant SVCD. I therefore tried to create a custom Digital VCD profile. When I tried to capture with it, the program froze, thereby locking up Windows (the repeated BSOD). It didn't drop any frames, the program just died. It captures fine using Video CD (reset to 1.15Mb/sec instead of 1.05) and several of the other presets. What are the best settings to use to capture a compliant SVCD. I know the bitrate I need, but what about de-interlacing, visual masking, VBR settings, etc.

Also, the audio is slightly out-of-sync with the video, but not choppy at all. Is there any way to correct this at capture time, or do I have to fix this later?

Lastly, opinions: Is SVCD MPEG2 at 480x480 better than VCD compliant MPEG1 at 352x240.

  2. I also have an ATI All in wonder card 128 not pro (mine is pci 16MB I'm running a p3 500. I've tried capturing to mpeg2 svcd. I've had it over a year now. You can do it by changeing settings in the registry. Here is some help. http://www.vcdhelp.com/ATI_AIW_Guide.htm
I didn't have much success it worked but I wasn't happy with the outcome. I prefer to use the Avi Capture and use TMPGENC to make a SVCD compliant mpeg2. Many people with faster systems then you have tried also. Most VHS and analog camcorders don't have 480 by 480 resolution or close to that. I usually capture at 352x240 avi then convert it an mpeg2 file that is 352x240 I realize this isn't an SVCD compliant format but my dvd plays it just fine and it cuts down my encoding time considerably. If you find out a better way let me know. ATI's capture software is pretty processor intense. Virtual DUB works real great. I have used ulead, ati's,MGI videowave and adobe premiere 6.0 and ulead mediastudio pro 6.0 for capturing and I still prefer the free virtual dub
