  4. wizzy,

I read your question right the first time and realize you are asking if anyone knows of any software
Super software is of no use to me if I cannot affort it, and hence my comment meaning that it would also be nice if it were freeware.

also go digging on Google for ABC VideoRoll - it's freeware NLE, don't get discouraged, it's out there for download, it'll just take a while to find it. Not sure what formats it supports for input.

  6. Unfortunately, there is no "super software" packages available that will do all these conversions for you. TMPGenc is a good encoder, but some of the conversions take numerous hours to finish. After the encoding, you will need a burning software like NERO to burn to VCDs, SVCDs, or DVDs. ULead Movie Factory 2 will convert MPEG1 to MPEG2 DVD quality files, then burn to a DVD with menus you set up. Hope this helps.

actually, Canopus Procoder looks like a good multiformat conversion app, check the specs here

    http://www.canopus.com/us/products/procoder/pt_procoder.asp

and it will allow you to "stitch" together files from different formats and output them as one united file.

but I don't know how much "editing" you can do on the footage, which I thought was a major focus of the original post.... plus it's $699, which is a bit pricey for some....

I think Cleaner will also do multiformat conversions.

check the Procoder page I linked to.

    Produce, Perfect, Process
To simplify your workflow, ProCoder provides some powerful manipulation tools to get your sources ready for conversion. Stitching allows you to link multiple sources of various formats together to create a single seamless result, preventing you from having to combine the sources in an editor

  10. wizzy,

    Don't worry about it

TMPGenc almost meets all of my needs. I only wish it could handle AC3 audio so that I could work directly with VOBs instead of having to frameserve from VirtualDub.

  11. For editing, absolutely. I use Ulead Media Studio Pro v7, it is stable, it edits all of the mentioned formats, and it outputs to whatever you want. I also understand Ulead Video Studio 7 does that. I haven't played with Vegas for a while but would be surprised if it doesn't edit all of the above formats.

Permiere is probably a bit on the old side right now, and you might have to get a plug-in or two to edit all of the mentioned formats. It should be arriving in a new version soon though, so that should be fine.

In short, any newer commercial video editor should meet your need.

    Import and export

Video and image formats: AVI (also non-compressed), MPEG-1/-2 (Ligos Motion Encoder), MPEG-4, DivX, Windows MediaTM, MOV (Quicktime Movie), MXV, MJPEG, BMP, JPG as well as MAGIX video deLuxe project files (for integrating into a new project).
Audio formats: WAV, Audio CDs (Ripping), MP3 and MIDI files.
Additional Export formats: Real MediaTM, rendered DV AVIs, Snapshot function (unlimited export of film motifs as BMP or JPG files).

    Note
Many of us using Video Deluxe 2.0 are having problems importing MPEG2 files greater than 2GB?
Magix's Tech-Support says they are looking into the problem. This may take months for a patch to come out.
Don't get me wrong. This is a great editing program anyway!!

Premiere with proper codecs (and supporting programs like Ligos, etc) import nearly anything and Cleaner 5/6/XP will export to nearly anything. And quality of both programs is phenomenal, not free by any means, and worth every penny.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.
