  1. I have a movie in PAL 352*288 in CVCD. When i play this movie on my computer it plays very well but i have to change it from 4.3 to 16.9 otherwise it gives me a strech image. At 16.9, everything is perfect. Now my problem is when i play it on my standalone it is strecht and i change the 4.3 to 16.9 but nothing changes. It continues to be 4.3 full screen and strecht. Anything i can do to change the format so it can play normal or 16.9.. I still have the file in my computer is there anything i can do with it?? By the way my television is a square television not a wide screen, but normally it plays the 16.9.

CVD is a Chinese Video Disc 352x480
VCD is a Video CD 352x240 NTSC or 352x288 PAL

No such animal as a CVCD.

VCD cannot be 16:9 ratio from what I've seen. (But if I'm wrong on that, somebody will surely come along soon to correct me.)

  3. CVCD do exist and is not chinese. If i am not mistaking it is spanish. If you read spanish take a look.

It is about the same quality as vcd.

My problem is that it just dont want to play LETTER BOX on my tv. When i play it on my computer it plays 4.3 full screen but when i change it to 16.9 it plays like all others movies wide screen. My problem is that on my television it plays only 4.3. I have the possibility to change it to 16.9 but to no avail. Is there anything i can do to change the original file so i can burn it to a cd and have LETTER BOX style on my tv??

I am surprised about all these new format. Soon there will be so many that we wont be able to convert them.

Well, you learn something new every day...

Compressed VideoCD (CVCD) is what they call it in Spain, Portugal, Italy. Must be some new European thing. Found a Spanish site, and being a Texan, yes, I speak/read Spanish (non-speakers can use freetranslation.com, but the translation is far from perfect).

Over here in the USA, we'd still call it an XVCD. X because it's outside the normal VCD specs and still MPEG1. They mostly just make the bitrate VBR 1150k and 92k-128k 44.1hz sound.

Anyway, add black bars to it by clipping, and then re-encode. The DVD players won't recognize 16:9 from a MPEG1 file, only 4:3. Must be DVD (or at least MPEG2) for 16:9 ratio playback.

  6. CVCD is just one of those old XVCD variants that someone of Spanish persuasion decided was "cool" enough to get its own name... (i.e., not too dissimilar from "KVCD").

It doesn't "exist" from an official standards point of view.

IMHO, all these "named" XVCD/XSVCD variants are nothing but a pain in the butt as they pretend to give legitimacy where there is none.

In any case, VCDs don't support any other display aspect ratio other than 4:3. Thus, if the XVCD uses a 16:9 display aspect ratio, then you are stuffed. The only way such an XVCD will play properly is if you have either a TV or DVD player where you can manually force it to output the image as a DAR of 16:9 (i.e., most widescreen TVs but very few DVD players).

If you want to disc to play properly, you will have to re-encode the video to the correct specs, but if it is a relatively low bitrate MPEG to begin with (and IMHO, everything of VCD or SVCD specs is in the general scheme of things a low bitrate MPEG) the output quality will not be too good.

And yes, if it is PAL (i.e., 25 fps) to begin with, you should leave it as PAL.

    Regards.

Is it a 4:3 TV, if not most widescreen sets should be able to automatically stretch or do it with some button mushing :/

Stuff that won't change size-system gets on my nerves.. (stares at Gladiator/Leon/etc DVDs and Playstation 2.. with all those funny anorexic pinheaded actors that get really fat when they fall over)

((u/d - g'oh, beaten to the punch by virtualis, left the window open too long ))

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
