i used to be able to use Osex, in fact i used it all the time cause dvd backup would never work for me. but now osex isn't working and dvd backup has been. but i was trying to rip spy kids 2 and neither is working. but the last few discs i've tried with osex always give me fatal error Thread_DiscFormat:pen[], what does that mean? or is there a work around? the latest discs i've tried are, once a thief (reg. 1 ntsc columbia tristar), the animal (reg. 1) and spy kids 2. any thoughts on how to get it working??
sometimes i can just used dvd backup but osex used to work all the time. i'm ripping from a a03 superdrive.

DVDBackup will only work once you have loaded the disc into question through the DVD Player first, you only have to do this for a moment, the DVD Backup should work fine.
There have been on occasion the rare disc that doesn't seem to decypt properly, I would suggest OSEX - which brings us to the next point.
I can't explain that particular error w/ OSEX, however, what you could do is save as DVD Image, this takes a long time, but works just the same. You'll have to mount the imagine (apple-m) in toast though, DVD Copy doesn't cooperate in this respect.
Hope that's helpful

OSeX can crash if DVD Player is open to the same disk you're using -- make sure to close DVD Player before you start ripping.
It also has a hard time with folders and files other than the standard AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. If your disk has JACKET_P folders and/or other weblinks, autorun files, etc., chances are OSeX will conk out when it tries to write these to your hard drive.
One solution is to copy these files to your hard drive directly. Make your main folder and transfer the extra files and folders into it. OSeX may still write all sorts of crazy folder names as it tries to recreate the disk structure, but in the end there will be a folder that has all the VIDEO_TS stuff in it, and you can delete everything else.
Although this seems like a pain, when you get it right it goes quickly. MUCH faster than making a disk image, which with OSeX takes about six years. -
OSeX is notorious for not handeling DVD FOLDER output very well.
If you can, let your dvd load into apples dvd player, and then quit it. Althought it sounds strange to do this, it almost HAS to be done inorder for any programs that access the dvd to work properly.
(as mcrispin pointed out)
That said, try dvdbackup with your spy kids 2 after its loaded into apples dvd player and you have quit it. 9.9 times out of 10 it will work properly.
If not, thats when you try OSeX (sometimes it can handle this, but my experience has shown me its more like 1 out of every 10 that will work properly (more so with older movies as newer movies are loaded with extras as schmeg has mentioned) OSeX really doesnt like anything extra.
That said, hopefully the dvd backup method will work more efficiently for you. schmeg's method is another alternative as well.
