  1. first my equipment. i have a denon DVD-800 player ( it can play DVD-Video discs, CDs, audio CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 CDs), powermac g4, i will buy a cd rom burner this week ( to make mp3 discs for my audio situation, and to back up my shows. im looking at the que!fire line. ) . currently i have no way to import analog video. i will need something. i was looking into an external device (to mimimize signal loss. the inside of a computer has so much going on it interferes with the purity) something thats under 300 $. my source is a tivo digital recorder. ( i will like to copy dvds too. but thats just an afterthought. my main reasons for all this is to back up my tivo shows at the SAME quality as its recorded. the recordings are way above vhs quality, but fall short of dvd. i belive the tivo does in fact use mpeg2. it may be my cable rf input holding it back. but its still clearer than vhs) now i want to edit out the commercials of my fav shows (can it be done with imove2?) burn them onto my cd burner in svcd mode and play them back in my dvd home player on my tv. what do i need to get software wise? any hardware thoughts? and what do i need to get to do the dvd burn rip thing. i would like any help. i know it can be done. but i dont know what programs are out there..or which one is best. i dont know what is the best way to go just yet. or whats the best hardware for the job. keep in mind i have a buget of like 600$ for this (to buy the burner and the unit to import the video) and does anyone see compatibility issues? thanks!

  2. I THINK this can be done, but I it will involve removing the HD from your TiVo. You might try the search function on this message board.

On Replay TV units, you can remove the HD from the unit and hook it up to your PC, for easy drag n drop transfer of your mpeg2 files to your PC. From there you can use TMPG to encode, then burn to VCD or SVCD, bypassing the whole "iffy" process of capture. I havent done this myself, but I know its being done with excellent results & quality.

The new Replay units (4000 series) have a built in ethernet port. Ideally, this would allow you to transfer your MPEG2's from your Replay to your PC's hard drive. But the Replay guys are being non-comittal on whether this will work. The units are expensive, though...from $700 up to $2K.

I don't know if there are legal issues involving the ability to transfer Replay/TiVo files to your PC. But it is is ideal for anyone (like myself) wanting to transfer keeper material from a PVR unit to their PC for editing/archiving.

Another (expensive) alternative would be to transfer files from a PVR to a VCD unit like Terapin or an SVCD unit like Malata, then opening the disc on your PC for editing/burning. I dont know the specifics of this, but I'm guessing others on this board might.

  3. If the TiVo has a "out" on it you could use a TV tuner card to tune it and then use a capturing program or something to convert it to avi or mpg.... convert it etc... sounds like way too much of a hassle to even bother.

I have a Tivo and found that it was extremely easy to record from Tivo to PC. The Tivo has lots of extra inputs and outputs in the back. I connected the Tivo composite video-out to my ATI Radion's (my computer video card) composite in and then the Tivo audio-out to a cable that took 2 rca jacks (right and left) and converted them to one, and connected that to my pc's audio card (a creative labs soundblaster card.)

My video card's software recorded in MP2 format (I think it's an ATI thing) which I'm assuming would work for SVCD, but I had to convert to MPEG1 because my DVD player only plays VCD, not SVCD.

Most likely, you'll only need to add some sort of video capture card (and make sure you have audio in) and you'll be up and running.
