    I was wondering if there was a way of converting a DVD-RAM video recorded & edited (chapter points, cut out TV commercials) on a Panasonic E30 to DVD-R while keeping the chapter points and menu intact? I want to be able to play the disc on a standard DVD player. I was hoping this could be done without me having to either recapture the video on my computer using my capture card and re-authoring the DVD. I also didn't want to re-render the video so that I can import the video to an authoring program like DVD Worksop and add back in all the chapter points again.

  2. I am going to combine my limited knowledge of both the DMR-E30 and DVD files to become completely dangerous and try to answer your question.

    First, since DVD-RAM discs are not "finalized", there are no chapter points or menus. In fact, the player seems to handle everything when it comes to discs that are not finalized (both DVD-RAM and DVD-R). No matter what you do on the recorder--create markers (similar to chapter points), rename different segments, cut commercials/scenes--the resulting files look the same on the computer.

    There will be three files: VR_MANGR.BUP, VR_MANGR.IFO and VR_MOVIE.VRO. Since I have not had much luck with editing .IFOs and such, I will defer to those with Skilz. I tried creating a new .IFO with IfoEdit but I guess it does not like non-standard movie files because nothing happened.

    Other than finalizing a DVD-R in the recorder itself, you will have to encode and author the movie to get a set top-playable disc. Change the file extension from .VRO to .VOB and encode or frameserve with VirtualDub (recent version), then author with your tool(s) of choice.

    I hope this answers your question (somewhat). If anyone wishes to correct me or add information, I welcome the input.

  4. Thanx PhilipL and GbMedusa! I'll be trying the Ulead Movie Factory and let you know. As to the VRO files, what ap should I use to author and burn my discs (DVD or VCD)?

    Have you tried virtualdubmpg2 to see if it would import these files?
    If not Dvd2Avi will probably import them too.

    Kwag has a guide over at kvcd.net, which may or may not help with your files. {It was written for an E-20}

  7. After getting feedback from customers about DVD's I've made on the computer and converting discs made on a Panasonic DVD recorder, I'm ready to buy my own standalone DVD recorder.

    It's been very easy to take the discs made on the Panasonic, and change them to a full DVD with menus, chapters, etc. I rip the DVD to the computer, de-multiplex the VOB files with TMPGEnc, multiplex back to MPEG2, then use Ulead Movie Factory2 to add the menus and chapters. Usually Ulead doesn't handle AC3 audio, but for some reason it's able to handle the MPEG2 files after they've been processed in this manner.
