Why does my Pioneer A04 claim to burn at 2x when all it does is create crapped-up discs that mess up while playing? Why must I go back to 1.40 firmware and burn at 1X so my movies will not screw up? They play fine for 30 minutes then start to flick/freeze/die.

I'm with you on this.
I have only ever achieved one successful 2x burn with my 104 which I have owned for nearly a year, and that was a couple of days ago when I tried a sample Ritek G03 disk that can burn at 2x with firmware 1.31. I was so pleased I bought a load more and the first one I tried last night screwed up 10 mins before the end of the film. Gutted. I burned the same film again on another G03 at 1x and it was fine.
It makes me wonder if the media supppliers have 'specials' that they send out as samples and then when you buy a batch you get the sh*t ones. A bit cynical of me I know.

I had a 104 for months and had no troubles at all with 2X especially G03
I've got a 105 now and I'm only peeved that the G03's work at 1X, but that can be fixed with latest firmware
so it's nowt to do with Pioneer and it's more down to dodgy media
CPU resources, burning software settings and the content you are burning can also have an effect
all these myths about burning at 1X is safer etc is rubbish in my eyes, it just means the media you have ain't upto the job or somits is up with your PC (you may even have a faulty burner)
this is the quality result I get using unbranded cheapy G04 @ 4X on my 105, the 104 produced the same sort of results
and the funny thing is the guy that bought my 104 complained about dodgy burns, until I saw the Bulkpaq media he was using and told him it was naff. I also told him the DVD's must be spotless and completely free of any dust or crap before using them which is another thing people overlook
I told him which media to buy and now he's over the moon, so you can see how opinions can differ even due to media
just cos it's a G03 dont mean the media itself is good

actually I think it's the movie. I tried Dragonheart and even at 1x I have slight glitches throughout the movie but nothing as bad as the 2x burn. It's hardly noticeable. I burned several other movies using InstantCopy just like Dragonheart with good results so I guess it's the movie. Regardless, death to 2x burning. I like Ritek G03s though, too bad the price has jumped a bit.
DIE 2X DIE

The first bunch of Ritek G03 I bought caost me about $2.50CAD per disk and would only burn at 1X on my A05. Switched to Verbatim Datalife 2X and have had far fewer problems. Just burned a re-encoded with Instant Copy movie at 2X. Took 26 minutes and no problems whatsoever. Stop using junk media. The Datalifes cost me $3.50CAD each but with no coasters, it's worth the price...

I have a great success using Accu media part number 102-010-050 from CdrDVDr and meritline using 104, 105 and Sony 500Ax with 2x. The key is trying to burn at ISO format using DVD Decryter, it worked almost all DVD player I tried. I have a small DVD business. Give to me a comment. Thank you.

the price of media has nothing to do with it all
I use the cheapest G04's I can buy and get the quality as shown in the pic above
costs me £1.80 (was £1.50) for a blank 4X (dunno what exchange rate is tho)
I get just the same results as I did with the cheap G03's quality wise
the hardest bit is buying a media that your burner works in perfect harmany
I have noticed the darker the dye the better the playback on fussy players
what get's me is all these problems people have
ripping (check settings & OS setup)
backup tools (again check settings and OS setup)
ISO images (no need for these at all whatsoever ripping or burning)
Nero (user setup if you use the correct version)
media (using poor quality media)
and a few more can be added to that list
how is it I have never had major problems with anything ever not just DVD backups?
I have had some problems but most were self inflicted but overcome in the end and the same goes for my mates cos I'm forever installing and setting up programs for them and telling them what to do and what not to do and what to look out for
I have lost count of the amount of times I've fixed stuff for friends or relatives or helped others using forums but I'll always try to help
but a lot more problems are closer to home and sometimes people blame the wrong thing because of this so that's why I always try to help others less fortunate

What gets me is the fact that my Apex AD-1200 POS dvd player will play anything I put in it without any errors. My new Sony 715 which is a sweet dvd player will play usually everything without error except for this 2X Dragonheart burn and a few others I was experimenting with. Apex sucks yet rules, wow.
-
my Sony is exactly the same (quality expects quality
)
Sony's are more fussy towards poorer quality media and some also have a precheck that stops the DVD playing if it is not 100% compliant
I have 3 DVD's that don't play on my Sony yet play on other cheapy DVD Standalones, a couple are down to incorrect DVD compliancy (early days of DVD backing up) and another is the crappy light dye Bulqpack media I used once (and only once never again)
but your problems sounded like either the stuff you were burning or a poor media you were burning onto
maybe it's was a combo of both, so that's why at 1X it wasn't so bad but it's never normally the burner or software to blame
-
Well I have 50 movies now that play fine on my Ritek discs. I have used 3 to do this Dragonheart burn and all 3 are screwy (except on Apex sigh) so it's obviously the movie. I use InstantCopy to do everything and I used it for Dragonheart. After taking out a 51minute extra everything burned at 90%.
The movie isn't that great anyway. I just hate screwups.
-
so don't you think the slagging of the Pioneer burner and the thread title is a bit harsh when it's actually the movie to blame
that's why you get more experienced guys like me coming to the defence of burners, burning software etc cos we know they are not normally to blame when we see a post like that
at least you know now though and that's what matters the most

1st of all, Riteks are NOT cheap media in the quality sense, but they are cheap as far as cost which is good.
Any pioneer DVD-R burner can burn the Ritek G03s at 2x without errors if you have the right firmware. I would suggest using the Gradius hacks if you have a DVR-A04.
If you are at version 1.40 and want to go back down to v1.31 that burns G03 at 2x use this by Gradius: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/sccs.ltd/pioneer2x4all/140down131.zip

I know for fact its the 104, I use to own one, I did the smart thing and junked it. I bought a 105 and its a sweet gem. So, I suggest you just buy a new burner, b/c you got screwed on the 104. I burn princo just fine with this 105 so its not your media, not to mention make sure your buffers stay full when you try to burn, that can be a minor-partial reason for messups, but under XP I burn 4X just fine and dandy. Good luck.

there are plenty of sites out there telling you which is the best firmware to use for the 104
and the 105 is just as bad, cos it won't let you burn anything at 2X apart from a select few but the hacked firmware is now available but then you are asking for trouble if you burn at 2X on unsupported media
4X shouldn't be a problem though cos as long as the blank is actually 4X it will accept it
