  1. Hi,

can someone explain pal to me. I have an all region dvd player and a digital tv. I live in the us. I have a pal dvd that my player reads, but i cannot see it on my tv. How can this be remedied? I thought all region meant any dvd.
    thanks

You also need a multisystem TV or PAL TV
    Try

Your player may be able to handle that PAL format, but your TV can not. As the previous poster stated you will need to buy a TV that supports the PAL format to watch your DVD. Or you could watch it in your computer.

In the US multisystem TV's are expensive and mail order only. It's much cheapere just to get a DVD player (like an Apex, Malita, Raite, etc.) that does the PAL-> NTSC conversion for you. My Raite 715 does this conversion perfectly.

  5. I never really understood that in the US...

In Australia, multisystem TVs are the norm...

Yeah my apex did a fine job the one time I tried it. Its not proven to be the best feature but its nice to know its there if I need it. My biggest problem is I'd like to find a way to get PAL VHS onto DVD with little quality loss but my Media encoder only accepts NTSC input (silly sony).

No options in the DVD player setup for output format?

Even my super-cheap bargain player allows to select between "Auto" (which yours seems to be in), forced-PAL or forced-NTSC modes... take a look, see if you can find one. Search the TV menu as well, it might just be something thats disabled. Hopefully...................

I'm kinda surprised to see a 'digital' TV (? digi in USA? u mean HDTV right?) not being able to handle a PAL signal :/
Because even the super bargain (doesn't even have teletext, which pretty much everything in europe has now.. even microwaves..) 14" TV sitting on top of the cheap player can handle any combination of PAL/NTSC signal formats and PAL/NTSC resolutions with impunity, and it's a good few years old...

Silly people cutting stuff down for america, when will they ever learn?

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

My TV is multi-system, it is just that. PAL or NTSC compatible from the multi-system and multi-region DVD player.

Even though here in Australia, our TV is PAL, I am at the moment playing "Gettysburg" and this is as NTSC in beautiful color and sound.

No problem here and in fact I can sometimes can buy an NTSC DVD here in Sydney.

piratehunter, if your TV is multi-system, I think you should check your TV settings. This maybe be the problem, your TV is set as NTSC only. Is it set as automatic or as NTSC only?

If your TV can't receive PAL then you have set your DVD player to convert over to PAL on a NTSC TV.
