I just noticed the other nite when making a backup of a dvd. First I ripped the dvd to vob files eith Claddvd. THen fed those into dvd2avi. During the conversion process, dvd2avi reports out several statistics. One of those is type (i.e., Film or Ntsc) and frame rate. For me and my particulars, the frame rate is almost always 29.97. However, the type is almost always FILM.
Now, for question. Encoding should follow the FILM type which is 23.97 for FILM ? or ???? Mainly, I have just been ignoring the FILM statement and just encoding at 29.97 and NTSC. All seems to be working just fine but there is this nagging question regarding the FILM statistic reported by dvd2avi.
    Any comments?

  2. All film sources are inherently 24 fps. To display it on TV, it needs to be 29.97/30 fps. This is done by Telecine, aka 3:2 pulldown. This is a very very simplified answer.
