im thinking about upgraing my PC so i can do better video capture, what should i focus on?
i have 240mb RAM
onboard video card
800mzh
and i have a $105 video capture card i dont know what type it is, the place i bought it just packaged it in their own box (Dick Smiths).
im thinking i need mainly a 64mb video card?
i can capture at 320*240, but i really want to capture at 640*480, but i lose heaps of frames

1. At least 1 7200 rpm HD.
2. P4 (or AMD+ if you can't afford a real Intel), PIII not great.
3. 256+ RAM, preferable DDR, RDRAM if you can afford it, SD if you must.
4. Video card separate from the motherboard. Integrated cards sap you system performance.
5. Capture card. (I suggest an ATI All In Wonder card, as it is both for CAPTURE AND VIDEO CARD). You can also use the VHS->DVD guide in my link for converting.
6. DVD-R/+R (or CD-R drive, though less quality) for output.
FYI: I built a new P4 1.7 with an ATI AIW, and 384 SDRAM, and DVD-R 4x drive, and 7200 rpm 80-gig HD for under $600 in January. It's my slave system. I already had a keyboard and monitor and mouse. It was a simple thing to assemble. Bought it all at Fry's Electronics (outpost.com).
Forget upgrading something so old. Just save up for a while and buy a newer system like I did for about $600. All I did was watch sales for 2 weeks and buy the parts when on sale.
Dropped frames is from a slow HD, slow processor, not enough RAM, and maybe a bad card. Any of these, or combination, did it to you.
Being in NZ, and not USA, do what you can in finding stores. You're a bit out of my neighborhood.I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.
